Quake 2 Paintball 2 Mod Instructions

To go with the oldschool reunion, I thought it might be fun to play the old Quake2 mod, so here are the instructions on how to get it up and running:

Step 1: Download the Quake2 demo: http://www.fileplanet.com/6584/0/fileinfo/Quake-2-Demo-v3.14
Extract wherever, Install it to c:\Quake2

Step 2: Download the Quake2 3.20 patch: http://www.fileplanet.com/6582/0/fileinfo/Quake-2-Patch-v3.20-
Install to c:\Quake2

Step 3: Download the Paintball2 mod: http://www.fileplanet.com/13521/10000/fileinfo/Paintball-II-v1.51
Extract to c:\Quake2

Step 4: Create a shortcut to quake2.exe.  Go to the properties and add the following after quake2.exe in the Target field: +set game pball

Step 5: Open the shortcut.  You probably want to change these settings:
set cl_run "1"
set freelook "1"
set gl_modulate "2.3"
set vid_ref "gl"
And, of course, set your binds and proper resolution.

You have to set debug1 1 and set deathmatch 1 if you want to run around and shoot, since there is no warmup mode.

If you notice any problems when installing Quake 2, try setting the compatibility mode for the installer to Windows 98/ME.

I can't wait for people to setup servers using the old Quake 2 mod. A lot has changed since then, especially graphics, this version looks more like Quake 2 than the newer versions. Can you use HR4 textures with this version?

Why did you get rid of the 300 round hopper?

The 300 round hopper was removed because alot of the older maps were 1-2 paths where you could sit and line all day long.

Quake 2 Paintball 2 Mod has no server browser, setting up a shortcut link is pointless unless a bunch of IP's are going to be dropped on the forums or IRC. Otherwise running gamespy 3d makes things much more simple.

Fixed.  That's what I get for writing this stuff with my tablet PC. :P

I imagine we'll be just posting IP's on IRC or something since there's not really a good server browser in Q2.

Note: You may want to set cl_maxfps to 60
