What Should I Work on Next? (2013 Edition)
« on: May 11, 2013, 11:01:04 AM »
Some sort of single player mode?
Better tutorial?
Improved mapping tools?
Higher-def content?
Performance improvements?
Something else?

Let me know what YOU think is most important to work on right now.

- Higher-def content (Features: 10099, 10136, maybe some of the renderer things + include hr4 Textures to the game, maybe an ingame download to keep the normal game download small)
- Performance improvements
- Separate chat from game messages (Can't see a feature vote for this, so i'll create one soon)
- A first time run screen [a short welcome message and options to choose a name (with check, if it already exist at dplogin.com to prevent a server kick), the language (list all *.lang files from the config folder), resolution / fullscreen and hr4 (like above: ingame download would be nice here)]
- Bug fixing like each year :)

Edit:
- Remove the server side scoreboard (use the client side only)

Higher def content
First time run screen (there's a feature vote for that somewhere right? actually I could probably do this one)
And make the darn AI code load from a library :P so people can get to work on it, a singleplayer mode can come after that

bots can do jumps and know where to go
Maybe BSP must consist of a AI function to make nav files for the bots to process as I hate them to always do same thing. CS:S supports making .nav files and make AI better. Many pro players may contribute a gr8 AI if they all start providing their moves for making nav files for dp2 bots
Also A website on bantero.us like ----->   navs.bantero.us would work gr8 as a sharingwebsite for .navs I would contribute too :D
it could be a command like navs_create "Hero Stepping"

Some kind of advanced AI please.

AI will open a whole new world of single player, co op and map making.

1. In-game chat, or even something like a friends list which tells you which server particular people are on.

2. High-def content

Go to paintball2/pball/pics, find ch<number>.pcx or .tga or whatever where <number> is your crosshair number, open in image editor of your choice, change colour, save. :)

Improving Linux sound...

At present it doesn't work well in Ubuntu at all.

The main issues are

OSS:-

- Oss works fine if your OS supports it, it is going to be removed from the kernel completely shortly - game plays full speed, stable.
- Ubuntu removed the old oss modules from the kernel - the alsa-oss and the oss-compat package do not contain them - you cannot use oss in ubuntu unless you compile your own kernel.
* note : Debian, Fedora, Opensuse, Arch linux all still do have the oss modules built in the kernel (you have to manually activate them)

Alsa :

- Speed is fine
- Doesn't crash
- Sound doesn't work (cuts out constantly, mix ahead settings do not help...)...
At present the alsa module doesn't really work - it doesn't matter if your using pulseaudio or not - it cuts sounds out before they have finished.

SDL :

- randomly crashes on startup (only with SDL module do you get a 2 in 4 chance of it segfaulting straight away)
- on some systems its far slower - game loses its great responsive feel
- also creates a speed fluctuation in the game (sound and fps slow and speed up) making it harder to play in

Jitspoe mentioned openal support - is this coming ? or can the alsa module be fixed ?

Improve performance - better map format so we can make better looking maps. - ai/ single player - ingame chat / friends list - better animations - better sounds.

- New Map Format
- AI/ Single Player
- Friend List
- New Sounds (I like the old ones but I am not sure new players will, plus you wanted to get rid of them anyway I think)

Off topic but I think a wiki would be good, also some updates to the FAQ

There was a great wiki but I think bots destroyed it.

Should work on the textures first. :D

edit- Since they're already half done anyways.

2nd edit- and so people can stop switching out textures to get an advantage while playing. Make this texture pack set in stone so everyone has to use it and if they don't they get modified content ban.
