ooh! Add my vote to supertanker's idea right there. Also Quake 2 had some neat traps you may want to bring back in your maps, such as entering a room, stepping on a trigger that lowers the ceiling slowly and closes the door, and then having to shoot (or in dpball's case you could make it far away in this room so that you have to run to it and press it) the button on the wall opposite to the entrance to open a hole in the floor for an escape before you are crushed.
