It's kind of cool in the sense that people can actually chat with you in the game.  You hit some key combo like scroll lock + Q and it brings up a chat window overlay directly in the game.

Same here... but there's a gaim plugin for the xfire protocol, so it wouldn't be too much of a bother to use.

They need to support Tremulous too.

This xfire thing would be very sweet to have in DP!  Would be awesome to be able to use the voice chat function to go with teams.  Might end up being a bandwidth issue on some servers though.

Most clans use ventrilo or teamspeak already, but even using Xfire its more of a peer to peer thing I believe then server-based.

well, that's true, but I think it works best for RPG/RTS and not as well for FPS.  Chatting while playing DP would distract me from the game, and in a fast paced game like this, it is unlikely that I will use it (I've been using it for other games already tho). It would only serve its purpose for me in this game while I am observer.

Well, it's not much of an issue in paintball2, but some games don't play nice when you alt-tab out of them *cough*bf2*cough*half-life*cough*, or some chat programs *cough*AIM*cough* pop up a window in front of whatever you're doing, which can be really frustrating when you're 2 inches away from that winning cap or have your crosshair just about lined up with somebody's head.  It's nice not to have to leave the game.
