Graphical glitches and lags

Ok when i get in a server with a big map. The map like cuts items and stuff and lags. Like the map would only show the ground with the bottom of the items touching, with walls like cut in half and stuff
My comp has 1.8ghz and 512ram
My internet is Road Runner
What can i do to make it run smooter?
