[BSP] Inserting stairs/rooms
« on: October 02, 2006, 06:21:49 AM »
hi i just got the bsp and worldcraft map editing programs, I know basic entities and brushes but in BSP what are the dropdown lists of stairs, archs, rooms etc.? Relating to that question how do i insert stairs and rooms? Do you just creat one big landscape of rooms linked by holes in walls?

That's more or less it. You can only make brushes, which are convex shapes with as many sides as you want. You can place convex brushes next to each other to make it look like a concave shape in-game, but the dropdown list just does that automatically for you. To use it, you have to have a brush selected, then choose what you want from the dropdown list, and press 'Make'.

Right so if I make a arch by brush, and click arch on dropdown menu then press make, what will it do?

Also, when setting spawn points how do you make them for each team, like blue spawn points or red ones

I'd avoid using the dropdowns as they tend to generate things that don't line up with the grid (unless you calculate things carefully before you create them).  It's better to make the map line up will with large grid sizes to help make the map look clean, keep textures aligned, and make the map more manageable overall while you're working on it.  The only drop-down I use much is "n-sided brush" to make barrels

Flipping a texture: Select the surface you want (just click on it in the 3d window).  Press "S" to bring up the surface window.  Change the box for "sx" (scale on the X axis) to "-1".  Press "Apply face".

Ladder: Make a brush out of the clip texture just in front of the area you want to be climbable.  Hit "s" while it's selected.  Make sure the "clip" options are checked.  Check "ladder" as well.  Hit "apply brush".  You can also apply the ladder flag directly to a surface you want to climb, but if it has things like rungs with spacing between them, it can be difficult to climb.

One last thing, how do you make ramps? I tried rotating wedges but it did not work!

O just remembered how do you make water? Is it just the texture or do u need to put a clip brush over it

I use clipping planes to make ramps.  In BSP, just shift+right click to make two points on a selected brush where you want the ramp to be, then click the carve button.  The clipping tool sucks in WC and only works in 2D.

A few pics that should help you.

#1: First, select the object and select the first point on the line you want to clip the brush along.
#2: Then, select the second point and press carve/split.
#3: Use any texture, just make sure you set light and a value in the surface properties menu.
#4: These settings will start you with an autococker, 200 paintballs, and Loaded 20oz co2

Use the clip texture to make an invisible wall that people can shoot through, trans33 or trans66 to make a transparent wall, or nodraw to make an invisible wall that people can't shoot through.  Those options are all in the surface properties ("S" key in BSP).
