Server problem
« on: October 22, 2006, 12:26:27 PM »
I have set up a server, but ingame it appears grey and I can't connect to it. Could someone help me?

btw if you set up servers like the way it said in tut., then what is the ingame action "Start New Game" supposed to do?

paint ball has two kinds of servers. one is in-game (the "start new game") and one is a dedicated server. the dedicated is explained in the tutorials. and i think its more stable than the in-game one.

with that said,  are you trying to connect to a dedicated server that you set up? or are you starting an in-game server and trying to connect to it from another computer? or something simailar?

The in-game one is more for LAN usage and messing around.

i think its because pball is still pinging servers. if that is the case just give it a few seconds. but im not quite sure.

Usually you can't connect to your own server -- not from the external IP address, anyway.  I'm not sure why this is.  You'll have to get somebody on a different connection to test it.

what do you mean? ive started a dedicated and connected to it with the same computer. ive also started an in-game server and opened pball again and been able to connect to it.

He means that you can't connect to your server using the IP address everyone else sees. You can still connect to it, but not using your public IP.

im not sure what you would type but this is what i do. go to the console from the main menu and type "connect" then your computer name. for me its an address assigned by my school. (ie zorchenhimer.dorms.[...].edu). i can also use my school-assigned ip (10.62.xx.xxx), note that this is not my external address. (158.xxx.xxx.xxx)

PS jits, why is the spell check acting weird?

Which is what I was saying you usually can't connect to.

Generally all of your local servers should show up in the list but using your internal ip (something similar to 192.168.1. _______  etc. if you are using dynamic routing.

As to why it doesn't show up in the list at all...not sure I can help you there.

Tell ya what though, I am trying to get my dedicated server listed too so perhaps we can look for each other's server on the list.

Here is the title of mine:

m7's all dm, pgp

If anyone wants to see if it is showing up I would appreciate it.

I also have 4 or so bots running around in there in case anyone wants to just try out some target practice while waiting for humans to show up.

By the way, is there a way to check the servers outside of the game? Ie a site or something that lists them?

since you can only connect by the internal address it is hard to know if it is showing up. I have tried running it on the wife's laptop usring a separate wireless connection so far.

there is a stand alone server browser that comes with the game.

-edit-
or you can use kquery4 with some tweaking:
