Not showing up in list after firewall and router adjustments
« on: October 25, 2006, 01:31:38 PM »
I forwarded the ports. I also tried putting the computer in question as the dmz for a bit just to be sure. And I allowed access through my firewall. But I am still not seeing the server on the list.

Any ideas?

Hm....alright I forwarded my ports in the router configuration, but they are not forwarded.

Tried two online services and they time out.

the same holds true with the server in a dmz and with no softwall firewall (not that you would run it in that mode anyway, but it should work).

So what could be going on here?

isp blocking?

is it your router or windows firewall?

Are you running XP? Are you running Zone Alarm or some other 3rd party firewall?

xp, and I shut down the firewall just to see if that was it--it wasn't.

isp blocking is unlikely as I read their policy and they do not block.

So perhaps it is the router.

Maybe i need to pick up a new router.

I will try bypassing the router to see if that does the trick.

I see your IP on http://dpball.com/serverlist.php, and I can ping it, but I can't connect to it with paintball2.

Incidentally, what does that mean that you can see me? That just means it is sending a heartbeat, right?

But that doesn't require open ports or does it?

I see it on there too, and have for a while.  I think I made some adjustments that may help...but I am still not sure the ports are open correctly for some reason.

Yeah, it just means you're sending a heartbeat.  If you can access web sites, you can send heartbeats (it currently uses HTTP).

There are basically 4 things you have to watch out for:
- Windows firewall (make sure paintball2.exe is on the allowed list).
- 3rd party software firewalls and anti-virus/anti-malware utilities (Norton, ZoneAlarm, etc.)
- Hardware firewall.
- Router port forwarding.

Alright, I adjusted one or two more things. If this doesn't work I think I am going to just go back to dynamic ip assignment and call it quits.
