Updated wiki discussion link: http://dplogin.com/forums/index.php?topic=6428.0

On the subject of player visibility, I did try to make the players have as much color as possible.  I couldn't really find any good real jerseys to model them after, so I designed my own.  The real ones are much worse about having too much black.  Most jerseys are all black with little stripes or hints of color here and there, like this: http://www.assassinspaintball.com/home/images/c6%20jersey%20blk%20red.jpg

I at least tried to make over half the skin be the team color.  Also, in the new build, I did explicitly check for the old quake2 models and skins since some people have stated they prefer those.  I don't have a problem with them being used, however they can't be distributed with the game since they are copyrighted.  To use the old models, you need the tris.md2 and weapon.md2 from quake2/baseq2/players/male, then grab pb2r.pcx, pb2b.pcx, pb2y.pcx, and pb2p.pcx from the old quake2 mod release (should be able to find this pretty easily on fileplanet if you don't still have it).  I think you also need to delete the pb2*.jpg files.  Then set r_oldmodels 1.  If all goes well, you won't get a warning about modified content.  In all honesty, though, I think the new models are easier to see.  They may not have as much color covering the skin, but the colors are brighter, so they stand out more.

Edit:
Quote
(and I feel like this was the general intent of quake2 to make the opponents as easily distinguishable as possible.. and something that has been lost somewhere in the updates...)
I do have to disagree with that.  Almost everything in Quake2 was yellow/orange/brown, including the players, and there were several camo skins available.  It's a lot harder to see the players in Q2dm than it is in Paintball 2.

Jit,

SEVERAL years ago.... You had the ability to drop gun/hoper/barrel at end of round if you were still alive.  Didn't do anything for gameplay but was just "fun"

Any chance of getting that back?

There were issues with that.  I don't remember the specifics, but you used to be able to do things like fire and throw grenades at the end of the round and kill people spawning during the next round.  The whole state system was redesigned a bit to prevent any mishaps like that from happening.  I'm sure it would be possible to add specific things like weapon dropping back in, but it doesn't really serve any purpose.  I don't think it would be worth the development effort.

Edit: And is that a vote, or are you just throwing it out for discussion?

The only reason that dropping equipment would be useful is if you kept your weapons from the last round. Of course that would compromise the whole game as we know it. There are more useful things to vote for!

Just throwing it out for discussion.  I remember it jsut being realyl funny everyone at the end of a round tossing all of their gear.  A Victory dance type of thing.  I think that was eliminated aroudn the time that if you left-clicked really fast when you were dead you could randomly cause players to disconnect.

I vote to substitute the "Kills" for "Eliminations" on HUD, and in the score table substitute "Kl" for "+" and "Dt" for "-".

i think this a no violence game, no death, no kill, no blood...

I agree.

We need to get rid of all references to "kills" and "deaths"

This IS paintball. And therre is no "kill" or "death" in paintball.
But if you are going to go that far then maybe the death animation should be removed also.
How many paintballers get shot and end up falling to the ground dead?

Edit:
Keep in mind I really think the game should be called PAINball, the paintballs change to instant death darts, and more blood and gore added.

In other words, i'm not the "OMG remove "FAIL" from the grading system or you might hurt someone's self esteem" type of guy. But it IS paintball and to be correct kills and death should go.

I'm fine with changing the terminology, but it needs to be clear.  Even though there aren't really "kills" and "deaths" in paintball, it's very obvious what each one means.  "Eliminations" is not so clear.  Is it how many times you've eliminated an enemy, or how many times an enemy has eliminated you?

you are right jitspoe, cause this i've think to substitute "kill" for "eliminations for" and in the table score "kl" for "Fo" or "+" and "Dt" for "Ag" or "-". What you think about that? im thinking in others terminologys, if someone know one good, its welcome!!!

What about a completely new admin menu, or just put some more things in it. Kick, ban and warn aren't enough.
I know that you can do more on console than the admin HUD. Like, the forcejoin command. AND the viewgib and other stuff. BUT why is there only a "viewgib" why not just a simple gib and a player number after that ("players" command).
And you should to put these in the admin HUD. All of them, and even a little more.

Functions for example:
Code: [Select]
slap "Player number" "Slap power" "x y z"
Makes the guy to fly in some direction without specifing the coordinates to fly in to, or to directly fly high with something like 0 0 50. Coordinates shouldnt be required to use slap command.

Glow "Player number" "R G B A"
Makes the guy to glow, easier for enemies to spot him. R G B for the colours and A for the amount from 0.0 to 1.0. Command unglow "Player number (or write all for everybody)" to unglow player(s)

Freeze "Player number" "Time"
Freezes the player to where he/she stands in. The amount of time could be empty for freeze-until-die. Likewise the unglow, using "unfreeze "No./All" unfreezes the player(s)

I could come up for lots of more stuff like this, but it ain't necessary until you tell me is this possible.

All those commands sound pretty stupid to me. The glow and freeze make the game unfair. The slap is just plain dumb.

I would like to see with what gun I spawn at the start of the round (pbcup_renoir for 1 example). I usually have to fire 1 or 2 shots to hear the sound of the gun to know what gun I got. In renoir if I have spyder or VM I usually go for cocker. So, some way to show what gun I spawn with(if I spawn with one)?

Also, hud could look alot better, some thinking to design team, if there is one.

All those commands sound pretty stupid to me. The glow and freeze make the game unfair. The slap is just plain dumb.

If a guy breaks the server owner rules then why wouldnt he punish the guy. OonSuomesta ideas sounded quite funny and original to me :p

Those types of commands tend to just get abused by child-like admins who think it's funny.

A punishing system for team killers is a good idea, though.  If you get team killed, you could choose to punish or forgive.  Maybe we could actually get some public friendly fire servers up with options like that.  Makes the game a lot more interesting.
