Dp Ping?
« on: February 27, 2007, 02:05:17 PM »
Hey, I just recently did a fresh install of windows xp and a fresh install of DP. Problem is where i used to get ping of 50 and below on OTB pub servers, I now get 100 - 150. Cant imagine why? Unless somethings going on with the servers since i went out of town for a week and just got back yestarday. What could be the cause? Not my internet connection, im on 4meg. I assume its somthing to do with DP.

Thanks,
     ^Sharp.

You might need to disable some things like QoS packet scheduling.

start|settings|network (or you can right click on network neighborhood and go to properties)

Right click on local area connection and go to properties.  Uncheck QoS packet scheduling.

Note that i did fresh installation of both XP and DP...So what could have caused this? Only Thing different is, instead of using Norton Antivirus 2006 i use Kaspersky 6.0 now.

Ah, virus scanners can wreck havoc on your pings as some of them try to scan each packet for viruses as it comes in.  Try shutting it off and see if it runs any better.

I Did, I completely disabled it. for a few minutes i was getting 70ping which is still high from my usual 30 -50.  But then it just shot up back to 100 - 150. Id hate to imagine what ping i would get on chill servers...

After disabling Norton A/V my ping was cut in half. Of course now I have p0rn popping-up everytime I launch IE...

Noob comment/question: I assume high ping = more lag?

There's your problem.  Get Opera or Firefox instead.

Could be down to traffic shaping, in the last 2 weeks my ISP has started to use it, meaning i went from 120kbs to 20kbs on certain ports.

OTB uses ports (like 55555, 44444) that are shaped by many ISP's. If this is the case theres nothing you can do to combat it. You'll have to persuade the server admins to switch the ports to 27910 etc. or you could try to play during off peak hours (usually 00:00 - 13:00) to see if it makes a difference.

Same problem occurs on MeMi servers, so you could try one of those out (look for the one with port 44444).

Reed is from the UK.

For some reason unknown to me I ping on average 10000-11000 on any OTB and MeMi server, and i'm from the UK. My typical ch1ll ping is 112 and GT 130 so.. :/
