That's all q2 stuff.  Only thing that does anything anymore is vid_gamma.  I think what you need to do is buy a new monitor.  If it's too dark on the standard settings, something's wrong.  Unless maybe your video card doesn't support the overbright setting and hardware gamma -- what video card do you have?  Try gl_brightness 4 (affects framerate slightly).
