New Sky
« on: April 10, 2007, 12:06:11 PM »
Ok. I just wanted to see if I could make a sky in Blender instead of using Tarragen (the program used in the tutorials) and I think these came out ok. These are both low-res, high-res skies (512 and 1024, respectively). You would use them by typing "sky sand" in the console.

I think this would look good in that Strike at Karkand (Hotel Extraction) map, but s8n would have to finish it first.

Just extract this into your "\paintball2" folder. This file has both low and high-res versions.
sky_sand.zip ~8 Mb

------------------------------------------

This one is just a High-Res version of pbsky3. (512 Targa file)

pbsky3-hr4.zip ~50 Kb

Well, I was gonna download it but it's too much trouble to have to download a special program just to unzip the file...  Why not just use a standard .zip or .rar file like everyone else?

BTW, the sky looks nice....

Higher compression ratio. :) But if you really need a .zip or .rar, I'll upload one.

Uncompressed   .zip   .rar   .7z
19.9            7.33   6.51   6.30   (1024 pack)
66.7            25.6   24.1   20.4   (2048 pack)

I couldn't upload the 2048 pack anywhere.

Just extract this into your "\paintball2\pball" folder. This file has both low and high-res versions.
sand-1024.7z ~6 Mb

Not into "\paintball2\pball\env\" ? The hr4-folder into the env folder or into textures\pball\hr4 ?
I test both and without, but didn't see a difference from high-res to low-res.

It sure does T3RR0R15T, thank you...

Zorch I extracted to the dir you stated and mine wind up here: C:\Paintball2\pball\sand-1024...  How will the game see your sky textures if they are not in the same place the other sky textures are which I believe is here: C:\Paintball2\pball\env

I put the hr textures in that last directory manually and they work fine there.  These things could be very confusing to the less experienced players.

Edit:  LOL Whoops all having similar concerns at the same time. :)

You're looking for high compression ratio? PAQ8F.

EDIT: 19.9MB to 3.8MB

Perhaps a mod pack would suffice?  ::)

Nice job Zorch.  :)

Back to topic:

I'm getting a thin black line in every corner of this sky box, like the single textures do not match when touching.
Kind of hard to explain, maybe I can get some screens if necessary.

btw: I'm getting a thin black line on the texture sample in the first post as well.

Drat. I was hopping that no one would notice that. :P
For some reason Blender rendered that line in there. I'm not sure why, but I'll have to play around with it this weekend.

Umm, is it possible to upload this in a regular zip?  That'd be appreciated

Edit: sorry just saw your post above, yeah I'd like a zip if you (or someone) else could. I really dislike installing other extracting programs (just because of registry issues) if you could I'd appreciate it (And reward ya with +1 karma)

Also, if you have a WinRAR you could upload the 2048 package, by selecting the option when zipping of spliting it into volumes by bytes

so for 10 megs you'd type 10000000 b

Then it makes parts (figure 2) and clicking any of them automatically links them

Cheers,
y00tz

Just save the textures as high quality jpegs.  That should cut down the file size a lot more than any lossless compression algorithm.  Also, 256x256 is the stardard low-res sky resolution.  Some older cards might struggle with 4x's the texture data.
