Respawn Time?
« on: April 22, 2007, 09:34:42 PM »
I was just reading the topic in some other sections of the forums about clan DeW or something like that ( http://dplogin.com/forums/index.php?topic=5935.0 ) ....after visiting their link and taking a look at their poll it came to my attention that a lot of newer players dont like the default 60second respawn.  So i was just curious as to what the views of the whole community are about respawn times.

The most fair system (also closest to real PB) is no respawn, like castle siege. On the other hand that´s why this is a game where one does not have to obey the real life rules. So I´d go with 60 sec respawn.

Don't try and use what real paintball does and is to say how this game should be first of all! This isn't a sim.

Personally 60 seconds for match play, but i like the 45 seconds respawn on my server, I think for pubs 60 is only slighty too long.

Lekky, please don´t get so excited. As I said, this is a game where we don´t have to follow real life rules. I just said that I think that no respawn is a real life situation, and in a game I vote for 60 sec.  ;)

I think it's pretty funny for those runningshort respawn times  on maps where you don't spawn with guns.  Then when you respawn faster than the guns do and you don't have l337 pgp sk1llz you are hosed.

60 for pub, none for matches (assuming none means no respawns).

Only if you implemented some sort of round timer like in siege, but then you have to deal with stalemate rounds where it ends on time.  This is done easily with awarding extra points to the defending team in siege, but in CTF it's not really the same.

yeah, if you could limit a round to, for example, 3 minutes (like in Counter Strike) or less, that would be a viable solution for no respawning in matches.  Awarding points should of course be done for flag carriers there as well, which would finally make use of the new flagsettings (flagmusbeatbase & flagcapendsround). Well, 90 seconds might fit better in this fast-paced game, or else a lot of people would be bored ;)

Isn't the whole waiting for and taking advanatge of respawns a big part of match tactics though?

im fine with 60 as the overall default, lekky is right by assuming respawn times play a large role in matches and stuff.  the only reason the thread was made is because theres a bunch of pubs out there with different respawn times which is cool to know that there are admins out there who know how to mess with their server configs, but its just lame to not be 60 for lack of a better reason

In all honesty, it just seems like a cheap tactic to me.  Though a good feature for counter tactics would be an optional respawn -- in short, make it so players can select if/when they want to respawn once the elim time is up.

Round time limits might be a good thing to have in general.  Sometimes you'll just get those rounds that go on forever.  It would probably need to be at least 2 minutes to give sufficient time for flag captures on large maps like Brainstorm.  As for dealing with stalemates, it would just be a round draw and no team would get points (or each flag carrier would get 2 points per flag).

stalemates can be avoided by using respawns.  Round limits in a fast game like this would be pretty dumb considering some popular maps (pbcup_renior / castle1) are known for 1 round maps where teams use respawns to their advantage.

If theres one thing we've learned in the past it's that manipulating the gameplay of matches makes people very unhappy.

i second that. When the Alpha came out and there was guntemp and stuff and just the new graphics and what not it made a lot of people VERY unhappy
