You can't do much more than combining textures, alpha, and env-maps. Don't expect anything spectacular.

Perhaps if you were to combine two or more textures in the correct way, you would get rid of the tiling effect.  I've seen other games that do this and it looks great.

Hm, looks like you tiled it and added some color variations.  I think this would work better with RScripts, having one layer be the grass, and another be the color variation.  Then you could have the variation be low res, but scaled large, and it wouldn't have the tiling problem at a distance and you wouldn't be using as much texture memory.
Great minds, eh?

I think that's what Jits was describing about 10 posts back, I don't know really.  I'm seriously interested in a feature request for shaders, but when it was suggested in the OFVT 2007, I recall a post saying r_scripts essentially could do the same things.... if that's the case then I'd be a happy man.

I'm redoing some of the bricks, taking a better approach, less from photosource, more Photoshop.

Also, here's a little something I whipped up, I won't use it but I like the technique and I'll try to do it again with less contrast between stones.

I spent my lunch today photographing downtown.  I made a bark that I like, but should I try to make an HR4 replacement for the current bark, or add it to the ctp?  The second shot is the higher res version, both are seamless at the moment.

Also included a branch that's going on my next tree model, and then my wooden fence for my urban map, which is almost finished.. the fence that is ;)

edit- added next incarnation of the tree branch

That bark looks really nice- a bit fuzzy in places, but that's fine. :)

The branches look a lot better on my original model, I like this technique too and will probably stick to it.

Please do rotate the branches/leaves some so they don't look quite so arranged. :3
Other than that, more great work. I think jits may have demonstrated a similar technique some time ago in response to my cardboard-trees, but I can't remember anything about it.

You mean leaves per branch?

I mean the brush/face upon which the leaves are drawn, not the individual leaves.

I believe there are 3 different bark textures.  That would probably work for one of them.  Have you tried it in-game?  I wonder how well it tiles (probably the only maps you need to worry about that on are airtime*.bsp).  To cut down on the fuzziness, use a small, hard-edged brush with the clone stamp.

Here's the comp of scifi textures I've been working on in hopes that Dagless makes a good scifi map ;)

Nice... but why would you need traction on the ceiling? :)

haha thats brilliant y00tz - sorry I haven't replied to that PM, I've been drowning in deadlines and such. It really sucks I haven't had time to do anything on it for ages, but me and Reed have so much to do. After we finish up with our exams in may/june, we should have bags of time to work on it.

Sorry for the wait!

It was finally overcast here for the last two days, so I went photographing downtown and got about 200 source pictures :)

Cool, but why did you tile y_newrock34.jpg 4x's?  Why not just have it 1/4 the size and let the renderer do the tiling?

Oh I was just showing you guys that it tiles kind of nice, it's actually a fullsize of 256, proportionately it should probably be 128.

edit:  grittier version of white on black tiles

edit2: mmm grit looks good in pb2
