I just upgraded from build 16 and when i try to start a game, the map will load, but right before it shows up i get a windows program error message. i think it says the error has something to do with "ref_pbgl.dll". any idea what's going on?

wrong ref_pbgl.dll version maybe?
I'd say you try running the updater again.

Somebody else had this problem with build 17. What video card do you have, and what drivers are you using? I can't think of anything that would have changed to cause that. You might try downloading the full install and do a fresh install to a different directory to see if it still crashes.

video card is an ati x700 pro agp. and what do you mean, what drivers am i using?

yes, i know, my next card will be an nvidia. i just got this one from my friend who bought a new one.
but even still, for this game, my ati isn't a problem ... or rather it wasn't. it worked quite well before i upgraded.

I'm having the same problem I can't download 16 either and I have a brand new video card and drive I don't know what they are but they are brand new and I had 16 find but then when I try to get 18 it says theres and error on like 3 files and I can't get it I get some of the fetures like the login in and other stuff but it still says I have build 16.

wow ... umm ... big time run-on sentence, condor. hard to read. but i doubt whatever you're talking about is the same problem.

So anyway ... i upgraded drivers, and after a minor difficulty, they are installed and in working order.
but paintball still has the same error!!!

i included a screenshot of the error. i can also include the program dump if necessary.

(and yes, that's XP i'm running - just looks a little like vista cuz i made it that way.)

Aww Sorry about the last entry. Anyway I got my build 18 to work. I did what jitspoe said and changed the place I stored it.

ok, i'll try that next and we'll see. so is it a problem with the updater or what?

(edit: a fresh install didn't fix a thing!! this is a critical bug in build 18.)

I guess try to pinpoint the exact point at which it crashes. Unfortunately this is something that's very difficult to fix unless I can reproduce it myself and debug it.

Try this for kicks: in your fresh install, rename the pball/scripts directory to something else and see if the game loads. A lot of things will be messed up, but it will at least give us a hint if that's where it's crashing or not.

yuppers. that's it. i can get into a map now.
AND... the menu backgrounds changed to the binary one.

Make a new scripts directory and try adding the scripts back one by one until you find the one that crashes.

Um, that's not a texture script. It's a config. It also shouldn't be there with a fresh install. How did you end up with that file?
