download manager idea
« on: June 11, 2007, 11:36:58 AM »
ok the downloads take way to long on game so my idea is to have either

1. a download manager incorporated in the game like for instance you have it download textures separetly from brushes, separetly from weapons, etc.......

2. have all, i mean all, of the maps posted on this website to be downloaded [ i have a free download manager callled free download manager   :o off of download.com that speeds up downloads by 300% and it extracts download too  ;D] but if there is a 2. already then tell me.  8)

You're proposal probably wouldn't work.  First, the 'brushes' and stuff are in maps, and map files only.  Map files take a long time, but there is an effort to fix this (See "HTTP downloading for maps" in the Feature Request '07 thread).  The best place to download maps are from this site, a map pack, or through DPGet (See 'DPGet' by ViciouZ).
Between 'http downloads' in-game, this sites files library, and all the mirrors (like ch1ll is known for hosting map packs), and DPGet - you should be able to get maps fast.

I'd recommend taking this time to vote for 'http downloads' in the Feature Request thread.  Also note that your game shouldn't be downloading weapons... if so then something is really odd.

That would kind of be weird. I agree with y00tz.

yea i guess but what im try to say it spreads the data from the maps into sections and downloads them all at once. it would increase download time but you would need multiple downloader thingys for it to work   lol

Since we are talking about map packs I believe that Bring Your Own Paint has one of the best map packs right now.

I also believe there is a link to it on the files page.

Use DPGet by me. I felt I needed to be an egotist.
DPGet
This will get you maps faster than in game.

...but the limitation of DPGet is that it doesn't download textures or sounds, so you'll still have to get them from the server.

Where did you install paintball2? Did you enter the right directory into DPGet?
Check that dppath.txt matches your DP location.

Ok, If DPGet.bat is in the very same directory as paintball2.exe:

1. Delete dppath.txt is there is one
2. Set DPGet up again, but when it asks you for the directory put a .
3. Try downloading the maps again.

Yeah. Go into the dpget folder in that picture. Copy all the files EXCEPT dppath.txr. Go back to F:\(Jakes) and go into the folder paintball2. Paste all the files into that folder. Then run DPGet and when it prompts you for a directory type .
