CTP Release Vote - 56k warning
« on: July 09, 2007, 12:05:30 PM »
I have 150 textures that I could release right now and not be terribly embarrassed about.  However, they are all in hi-res format.  I'm writing a script to convert them, but even still, it'll be while.

What should I release first?  (Which could be as early as tomorrow morning at 1 a.m.)

Thanks,
y00tz

You're not just gonna release one monstrous pack?

I will, in CTP v1.0

but so that people can actually use it, I'm going to release a pre-release pack in 2 parts.

Are those 100% new textures or are some the HR versions of existing one's?

btw: My vote goes to grass, because most of the grass textures suck nowadays. ;)

They are new textures.  Taken from photos snapped by Nitroboy, Viciouz and myself.  Hence only having 150 prepared at the moment.

"grass as HR4's for old grass" --> that overrides existing textures, right?

Correct sir, if that gets the most votes, I'll release my grass as HR4 replacements for grass such that of grassp5.jpg.
In that event, "grounds" will just be fewer

I vote for none of the above. My vote is for all at once. :)

Let me start out by saying, I'm sorry if I've over-hyped this.   The textures aren't crazy awesome good textures.   I'm an amateur..  very amateur...  You'll easily spot which textures I made first, and which are my latest as you play.  I'm sorry if these aren't the good kind of work you were expecting.

All images are scaled.
Imageshack is being lame and may not work on some pics.

Brick

Metal

Wood

Concrete

Wall

Roof - This one is from Costa Rica :D :D

Tiles - Again, from Costa Rica :P

Ground

I don't know what  'they dont look high res' means... 512x512 isn't hi-res? :(

Just so everyone knows,  that's probably one of my worst floor textures. I extracted it from Nitroboy's school pics, I believe.  Also, the bricks have been tweaked some.

p.s. I have lots of cement textures as most of you have probably seen...  That one is a wet (as in water) cement texture... I pictured it looking great pool or pond side..IDK.

Cheers,
y00tz

I've made a .wal file of all your nine textures. But I don't know how to use they right, and where I have to put your textures, in the textures/pball order, or in the hi-res one.

also the wal files have a strange color in the bsp editor, i think there is also a mistake.

It's a pallette error, and to be perfectly honest, it's the only reason I haven't released them.  I wish I could figure it out...

I hope the textures released first won't be the less developped ones.

Have you configured wally to use the pb2 palette by default?  If you configure it in the options, it should work fine.  Also, the concrete IS the dirt texture with some modifications.  I can see the cracks in the exact same locations.  It's fine for another ground texture, but it doesn't really look like concrete.

I see you've scaled down the images for the post.  That's why a lot of people are confused, I think.  The metal texture looks like you've copied and pasted the same texture over and over.  There's really no point in doing this when you can just make the texture smaller and have the game engine do the tiling.  Same for the tile texture.  There's no sense in making a 512x512 texture that's just 4 256x256 textures copied.  Just make it 256x256.

That wood texture is really low quality because of the photograph.  I would honestly pitch it.  Hope you don't take this poorly.  I'm just trying to provide constructive criticism.  I do appreciate your efforts.  Better to spend some time and create a few high quality textures than a bunch of mediocre ones.
