Banned after first start
« on: July 14, 2007, 03:36:46 PM »
Hallo,

I have downloaded the Linux Version (Paintball 2.0 Alpha build019 Full Linux x86 Standalone), started it, configured some settings and wanted to join a server. But I got only too different messages from all servers:
- "Bad Password [...] Temp-Ban." or
- "You have been global banned for the following reason: Modified player skins  See digitalpaint.org/ban.html for details."

How can I modified player skins if I just downloaded and unpacked the tar.gz?

This is reproduceable. Someone else can commit this behavior? I don't think my computer cause this problem. Maybe the Linux version isn't up to date?

Spook

You probably have a hostmask ban, and i'm sorry to say, the only man who can remove it went on vacation yesterday. Come back in around 10 days or PM jitspoe after you register a forum account here.

Interesting.  Thanks for bringing this to our attention.

First, click here:

And let me know if it says you're banned, and why.

Looks like it, good work Cobo.

This good news it looks like you'll be able to play in the next few hours :D :D   See where it says 0.2 hours?  When that's up try again and let us know.

I got a new IP address but my hostname still matches p54B9%.dip.t-dialin.net. So I'm still banned.

Yeah, just wait till next day. Not sure how accurate the time left on the ban is.

Maybe there is another way?

Unregistered users must be banned by IP address. I understand that.
But registered users could be verified by their email address. So it's not absolutly necessary to ban them by IP.?

No such thing as Account based bans (yet), also if that were to be implemented, people could just make a new account and play.

Yes. But this is a common way. I don't think there are many people who register a new mail address, register a new account at paintball2, wait for the activation code, changes their ip if they got banned.

I have the hostname p54B971DA.dip.t-dialin.net and I think the pattern p54B9%.dip.t-dialin.net matches more then 10.000 IPs.
The ban page counts already 2902 hits. Is this normal? Cannot be one user, or can it?

Yes it could be more than one user, sadly, there is nothing we can do for now but wait. since jitspoe is gone for some time.

And trust me, somewhere between those 32 days they would register a new account, email address and wait for activation code.

Yes, some of them would create 1 or 2 new accounts, but I don't think they will try it much more times if they get always banned after some time. This is a risk I would accept.

Blocking IP ranges like 80.1.2.* is always annoying for other people in this range, especially if they are new to the game and don't know why they are banned. Also another message would be helpful. Something like this "Your IP or IP range has been banned. Please try it again in some days."

But if you use IP ranges, they should always be as small as possible. => Never use hostranges like p54B9%.dip.t-dialin.net. % is a wildcard for 4 characters, including digits and letters. Thus you block 36^4 = 1.679.616 possible IPs. This range is even bigger than a 80.1.*.* range, which includes only 256^2 = 65.536 IPs and is used very very rarely.

Sorry, I thought I have also seen letters > F, but it seems that only hex values are used for the hostname. OK, then you block 16^4 = 65.536.
