I plan to format my hardrive on my laptop, so I was thinking of getting this so I could put all my useful stuff on there. Is it worth the money?

Be careful with external drives.  We use them a lot at work and they fail on a regular basis, regardless of the company that manufactures them.  If you're just using it to store things temporarily while you reformat another drive, it should be ok, but I wouldn't rely on it for a long period of time.  Might make for a good backup drive, though, in case your primary drive fails, or for downloading/installing large amounts of data that you don't really care if you lose.

After reading jits' post:
* KiLo plugs in his external hard drive and copies 20 GB of movies back to his laptop.

hmm. I think I will get more memory, then format my hardrive. I was planning on having my laptop free of almost everything, and just put everything on the external, but im not to sure of that now. Were you using 1 or 2 TB externals? cause I dont know if a 500 GB is going to fail on me. I hope it doesnt.

I want to say most of the failures we had were with ~300GB drives.  It's hit or miss with hard drives -- internal or external -- you might get lucky, but it's really important to make backups of the things you want to keep.
