Cars (for cover)
« on: August 18, 2007, 12:40:55 PM »
Would someone be able to make a car model for a map, not so it moves, but just so someone could take cover behind it. I'm working on a map that I wanted to put parked cars in scattered around. Also, how would I go about putting them into a map thats already maybe 1/2 done?

It would be insanely difficult to get a car model to cover behind, because models don't clip.

u could put strategically placed clip brushes to accomplish that. also couldnt u just make a car in BSP then save it as car.map to make ur own prefab.

Yeah, it's been done before, but generally the cars look crap. And if they didn't, then they increased wpoly a lot.

very true about wpoly, but i think it could be done. i have seen maps released with wpoly above 4000 and the map still does well from a playing stand point.

lol Yeah, It would suck for me trying to get people to play my maps, being a new mapper, if I get a reputation for insane poly counts. The map was supposed to be a siege map in the form of a tunnel that terrorists took some hostages in. Meh, I can still do it without the cars i suppose.

He made the car, released the source for free and public use... just got to "Submit Game Model Ideas" download it, convert to SKM or MD2 and wahlah.

But that was the problem at the beginning of the thread, we determined models were unusable!

he could put them in an unreachable area for show. and make it look cool. in the q3 engine there are bullet clip brushes, do those exist in the q2/pball engine? if so, then problem solved.

i did that. the link doesnt work. i checked that thread and i found it, but the picture didnt show up, and when i tried to go to logictechnologies.com/keith/whatever it was... it took me to an "error- not found" page. so... yeah.

also, cusoman, did you not read ANYthing? the topic is called cars (for cover) also, i said i wanted them in a tunnel. i never said anything about a car dealership or whatever you guys are talking about... lol :)

well alright. i guess i shouldnt change the idea on you. :P but i am truly stumped now, i say just make boxy looking cars in bsp. in fast play people wont care how bad the car looks cuz theyre hiding behind it. did u see the trees people have gotten away with.(shazam22,speedfacter/nightfactor,armagedeon) ;D

lol yeah ive made a couple different types of cars just in bsp by now for the map, and i guess your right, it doesnt really matter how they look if you're trying not to die. you're not going to be like "zomg! these cars suck!"
