Name changing
« on: July 15, 2005, 03:24:20 AM »
hmm I wrote some small script to quickly change your name in the game, it has some kind of menu where you pick your name, its easy to understand and easy to use and configure, those who run around with several names might want to check it out...

Eh... running around with several names is not something we want to encourage.

Even with registered names, people could use unregistered names (unless you want to exclude new players from playing without registering, which I think is a bad idea - it'd turn a lot of people off) or register a whole bunch of names.

Registering a whole bunch of names.  So what your saying is "I discourage this but will make not attempt to at least curb it". That is all we honest players are asking for.

The set back is newbs will have to take the time to register before seeing what the game is about.

and maybe making an email necessary for registering an name might limit the amount of ppl who might want to register many names.. with a limit of 1 name per email. but then u would also have to make a way for someone to alter their registered name in order to add/remove/alter clan tags. uggg well u have fun with that one jits :)

With as many free email services as there are out there, requiring an email address would only add a minute or two to the registration process.

That is why I said

The set back is newbs they will have to take the time to register before seeing what the game is about.

That set back is far more effective than you give credit, a prime example is most secured web sites. That is the whole point of online email verified registration. Jitspoe I feel really silly explaining this it should be taught in online gaming 101. :)

A name registered via email can not be duplicated

Changing your name via an email address would require the player to ask for the change name Via the email address request. Which can be pulled by logs. To many requests is a considered nefarious act by any gamer/admin/developer.

I know your swamped but this really needs to be done before leave q2 if you expect official servers to be official.

By effective do you mean effective at deterring people?  I had so many complaints about people not wanting to register with fileplanet to even download the game.  I'm willing to bet at least 9 out of 10 people will simply pass something by if it requires registration.  And even if registration is required to play, what's to stop me from getting 500 email accounts and registering 500 accounts so I can use 500 different names?

And a whole other issue is the fact that email registrations are becoming more and more difficult as spam filters block out more and more servers/text.  A lot of people may not even get their registration confirmation and thus not be able to play.  Certainly not a good way to get new players.

Also, you seem to be the only person really pushing this login/stats system.  Things don't really get bumped up on the priority list unless I personally feel they are critical or several people suggest or complain about something.  Yes, there are people doing immature things.  No, I don't think a login system will magically fix the problem.  And how bad is the problem, anyway?  You've sited 2 incidents on your server: somebody teamkilling and somebody with a high ping.  Logins would fix neither of these issues.  And when I read reviews of people who have tried the game, they complain about things like bad maps, low player limits on servers, outdated graphics, old weapons, bunny hopping, unrealistic physics, the sound clips...  Not once have I ever seen a first-time review complain about name spoofing, names in general, or lack of stats.

well i think those critics need to consider the fact that 1 man made the game... with the help of a few others. and that u are doing it for free. and that its not like the game is run on an unreal engine type deal neither is it made for a "next gen" system so one cant expect the graphics to be beautiful(although i am awaiting those new skies u were talkin about in other forum). the maps themselves are products of the players themselves and if their being played then their good enough. but ya i guess the name thing isnt a priority in comparison to some other issues. and even when ppl get all lame and use dif names u can still pwn them just the same.

u know the sou server has a stat thingy on it? once they have their website up the info thats gathered will be viewable there.

wish there was something i could do to help in the developement of the game but unfortunately i dont think the wheee bit o knowledge i have of proggraming/design isnt really used in dp. lol if there a tutorial sumwhere on sumthing that i can do to help then just email me :)

no but really i have nothing better to do... im a pretty quick learner if the instruction/tutorial is half way decent. hehe when i first learned c++ it was like crack. everything had to be perfect not only when u looked at it object/lighting/color wise but i had to make all the writing itself organized and neat... thats y im thinkin it might not be a career for me.. i wouldnt stop until it was perfect.

Unless you only allowed email adresses that you have to pay for (AOL, Comcast, Roadrunner (<- do they have email?))

Many people don't have email accounts like that, though.  I'm almost to the point of exclusively using web-based email.  Lots of people are already at that point.

But they have an ISP. They can just use that email for 10 seconds to answer the registration email.

1 willing to download the game with registration.

Thus far you have had more players that have had to register to down load your game and maps then those who did not, unless your counting those IRC clique retards that has not played Dp on a public basis since 98'
thus making them leet geeeks that tweak this game into a non public gam. Which is what this is. When is the last official match, dpl is now dead, or sadly pick ups, which I whole heartly supported,    I thouht so .

I seem the only one?  who else among ACTIVE PLAYERS HAS NOT requested global stats or a server stat or in the very least global logins? Please.......

iF that is all it takes to make honest players feel more secure then whats the big deal?

You are really now showing your un willingness to a non realistic game. So why complain about maps (that you will never play) or weapons you will never use (cockers)  I dont understand the fundemental laps of logic.

Any one else feel that pinch of a few? When i say few i mean those that do not play public paint ball which is played by far more than those that profess they know what we like. For example just look at the maps being played now.    nuff said
