My first map...
« on: September 25, 2007, 12:10:11 PM »
Hi,

Recently did my first map. Don't know if it qualifies here, but I am not sure if I should finish it at all.

No lighting effects or anything yet. Just rendered with the Vis command.

Heck, I do not even know if it runs in multiplayer mode... Hahaha!

Be gentle with me.

And please reveal how I make the sky a light-source that lights the whole level. I just made it light the corner of the whole level, nothing more.
I suck!

:D

Well first off you need to make a way to get from the lower to the flag. Also calm down the textures, there is no need to use everyt texture in your textures folder.

you need to work on
-texture choice
-texture alignments
-brush alignments
-its too open
-floating pyramid doesnt  make any sense
-make it look more real

it was kinda fun to run around in though
maybe scrap this map and work on basic skills of mapping and detailing
keep trying

 Sä, Jimmy from sverige.

You need to add some values to the "worldspawn" to get the lighting from the sky. First, you need to add "sky" key there and the value must be the sky texture you used. Then you need to add _sun_angle key and the values for different skies are (this key makes the light come from the sun)
unit1_: 72 -25
pbsky1: 198 -65
pbsky2: 150 -34
pbsky3: 85 -38
pbsky4: 90 -30
riverscape1: 194 -26
arctic1: 35 -30

so the numbers are the value, just to make sure.
And your map is lit with natural sun light!

And yes, the textures you used are rather wierd. Try to pick a "theme" - use metal mostly, because I doubt that those gigantic platforms would look good with wood or something.

And about the midflag I would personally suggest making it appear only in 1-flag mode. That is you add a key to that flag entity called "gamemode" and value is "2". I know very few maps which are good with neutral flag in middle. One of them is anubis. But who knows, maybe your map plays good with neutral flag aswell.

Sorry for the texture mania!
Did this map on my portable computer while waiting for a customer. Thought the colours looked a bit bland so I decided to add some more textures.
In retrospect, when looking at the regular commieputor I should've used less.

But hey... My first map. Done in an hour and then bugtested for 30 minutes.

And I do not have control over the entities yet. They run me not the other way around...

Opinions noted and taken in.

Oh, you cannot get up to the flag from the lower ground-deck because I thought it would be too fast with the centerflag option. You have to climb up a bit and then be susceptible to enemy attacks.

I am going to make a wooden cave-map just to piss all you texture-maniacs off! :D
Then I am going to call it "metal mania"! D:
I am going to incorporate Swedish cuss words in every crate and behind every texture.

Hahaha!

Please follow this guideline for releasing maps: http://dplogin.com/forums/index.php?topic=5149.0

The map you have here has no lighting.  To be honest, like most first attempt maps, it is probably better left as a learning experience and shouldn't be publicly released.  You should also spend a little more time and effort on future maps.

I never laugh at what you say, but that got a chuckle out of me.
