clan user problem
« on: September 26, 2007, 12:29:11 AM »
Hi, i'm in [N.K] as you can see in my sig, and tonight i was playing and a certain [N.K]-YO entered the game. problem is, no one in our clan (current, former, invited, requesting - you name it, i checked em all) has registered that name.

I'm pretty sure the server was GT Pub 1, so it would have validated users against the gls. so why was he let in?
we kept asking him who he was but he wouldn't answer.

I believe that particular person did not have brackets on his name although I could be wrong.

i'm pretty sure he did. but is it possible that they were symbols that weren't translated to brackets for validation??

Are GT servers updated to build 18? Beacuse if they arent, anyone with build less than 18 can fake clan tags. Right?

I saw him playing last night.  Wish I would have seen this thread sooner.  He might have been using something like [N.K.] or [N,K].  I'll check the logs.

He was using those weird alternate letters (look like they belong on a VCR :P). Which, to my knowledge, cannot be registered in the GLS.

I checked the logs.  He was using "[N.K.]-YO".  The LCD style letters just get translated to regular letters for the login system.

ok, so ... what next?

edit: i thought that clan tags were stripped of punctuation for gls validation.

No - some tags are purely non-alpha characters (such as all-starz' [***]), and there's a potential for clans to have the same letters but different identifying characters.  Also, if non-alphanumeric characters were stripped,  anybody with a name that starts with the clan tag characters wouldn't be able to use it.  For example, if somebody registered the tag .we., you wouldn't be able to use your name.  If there's enough of a demand for it, I may add a provision for pattern matching on clan tags, but it would have to be handled manually on a case by case basis to prevent abuse.

actually, what i was thinking was that a username with a clan tag might be parsed and split up into two parts within the program (one part being the clan tag and the other being the actual username). but ya that would probably require pattern matching like you say.

found another variation:

[N,K]IS-THE-BEST

playing on Graffiti Paint Pub 0, i believe.

honestly, why would ppl want to use our tag if theyre not a member???
