Portal!
« on: October 12, 2007, 04:50:01 PM »
Who's played/finished it? I had a blast playing it- took me about 2.5 hours to finish entirely.

Probably the best single-player game I can think of. Fairly simple story-wise, but the guide is funny and the twist halfway through is really well done, as is the atmosphere in the whole game.

If you want to play the game and not know exactly what happens, don't read the below.

I can't remember what the pre-release login was, but in-game there's a small bit of graffiti that says 'login: cjohnson password: tier3'. Have fun with that.

Finished level 18 right before I went to work, about an hour into it.  Can't wait to get home and finish.

It sounds kind of like a Prey ripoff.  I kind of don't like steam or valve, so I'm in no hurry to get it.

If it makes you feel any better, the original was created/released before Prey was released, and the idea came from outside of Valve.

If you watch the old tech videos of prey (from like 1998), they looked really similar to portal.

As for why I don't like Valve - steam isn't enough of a reason? :)

But seriously, they milk other people's work for every nickel and dime they can get.  Can you believe you actually have to pay for counter-strike now?  It used to be a free mod.  You have to pay for garry's mod, too.  It's like they're churning the mod development community into a money making machine, and they don't even have to do any of the work.

And then there's the fact that they kept adding crap instead of fixing the crap they already had.  Remember that glaring menu bug that would cause half the screen to go black?  They were too busy adding voice communication so I could listen to whiney 10 year olds to go along with the spray paints of scat porn and fake players.  And of course all the lies about HL2 being written from scratch, release dates, yadda yadda.  There are plenty of reasons to hate Valve.

I know old Prey tech stuff looked like Narbacular Drop (or vice versa) but either way, Narbacular Drop had it first. ;)

I haven't really thought about the mod-to-commercial-product thing all that much. I knew about it, and CS/Garry's Mod/Portal are all very good examples of it. It's certainly bad for the consumer in that they have to pay for the content, but it's good for them in that they have a higher-quality product (in theory. I haven't played much CS, and I don't know how Garry's Mod was before the buyout. Portal certainly does look cleaner, but that's probably just the engine.) They also pay the developers of the mods to keep developing (Is this the case with CS? Are the original people still onboard?). I mean, if your job was to develop paintball2, then you'd be able to put a LOT more into it, right?

Of course, then there's the issue with Valve controlling the content and all, but I don't know if that's actually an issue.

Yeah, silly Valve, how dare they think that creating and releasing a game engine is work.

They did that in, what, 2004?  And they didn't so much create a game engine as cobble together a bunch of existing technology.  Quake engine as a base, havok for physics, somebody else's research for facial expressions, etc.  I'm sure they did a fair amount of work, but it just bugs me when companies hype features that they didn't even create.  And now they're riding happily along on the success of mod authors.  Really, they've been doing that since the first Counter-Strike.

How did a game developed in 2004/2005 have technology before a game being developed pre-2000?  You're not making sense. :P

According to snippets on the Prey engine, the portal thing really didn't work that well back then. Not well enough to release a game based on it, anyway.
