Why is it that we cant see signatures????

Just wondering, how come we can't have images in our signatures?

Because someone got tired of seeing signatures longer than the average post. I don't remember who said that, but I remember reading something to that effect.

Yeah, you definitely can. KnacK recently lobbied to get the signature size increased btw, so it's now something like 4-500 characters. Most of us have them disabled anyway...

You can just create a rule to limit the height. My forum has that. Most forums SHOULD have it... ugh... I hate when forums let 5000px height signatures run free like Willy.

The real reason we can't have images in our signatures is because we must first master the supreme skill of painting a picture with mere words, ninjas must conquer the difficult path before they are given the privilege of using an easier one.
This is what sets us apart from everyone else. If you don't like it, leave, go become a pirate with Kilo, with his beloved torrenting and all. ^-^

Thats what the admin is for he sizes them auto with a script if it goes over the limit. it can be dont i did it on my old forum a couple of years back.

Well yes. My forum doesn't hard limit the size of signatures (at least not height), but when you do edit your signature, you will be warned very clearly that your signature is too big in dimensions. In posts, there's also a red box that appears under signatures (and it doesn't add height to the page) that warns if a signature is oversized. It takes a moderator three clicks and no typing to remove a signature and give a reason with an automatic PM.
In addition, there's also a *manual* check for filesize (<=100 KB) on the signature edit page, and I have a script that is run occasionally that removes signature that are too large in filesize.
The automatic dimensions check has so far worked exceptionally well. I haven't seen an oversized signature for a few months. Before, it was a common problem.

Require a post count of greater than <number> in order to use this feature.

Most of the people on this forum that would actually want to use a picture in their signature probably have enough pots already. If your just starting on the forums with 1 or 2 posts, most likely you aren't going to be willing to post over 100 posts just to put a picture in your signature.
Or maybe you can hide this feature, kind of like the 1337 posts = leet. It won't tell you until you actually reach the specified post count. :P

Theres no doubt its gonna happen. besides having pictures that are bigger then the avatars just means that I and many others are gonna have to scroll through more pages which = annoying, dumb.

No one is going to spam to put a picture in their signature. I can tell you that from experience. It is so unimportant. Now, if 100 posts got you... the ability to fly, then hell yeah people would spam.
You can also put a join date limitation. That's also effective.
And @ eradicator, not only can you disable signatures, the number of pages would not be affected by the addition of signatures with images.

The original oldbies of the Internet made the word signature mean what it means. The graphics people nowadays are the n00bs. Most of them are pretty bad at graphics anyway, and have no clue about theory as well (reminds me of a tutorial by a gfxer I recently read... rule of thirds for text... now that's a joke). The worst part is, most of them think they're all that. Ahem, reality check!
But ahem, 200px is pretty huge already. It's 200px max on my forum, but not many people come close to that. Not only is it annoying, it tends to look ugly.

IRON MAN is added. I think this is obvious, as are the benefits of allowing image sigs. How else will people be able to show off their filter-applying image-copying photoshop skills?

Nothing. Signatures, themselves, don't add anything at all. Since this isn't USENET, you can just click on a person's name to find out more information. It's just cool.

Every other forum I've been in has pictures aloud sigs, and it doesn't make anything worse, in fact, it adds more appeal to the forums. Makes it look prettier. Anyways, maybe you could *try* the pictures in sigs, and if it doesn't go well, remove them. Just talking about what you think will happen won't solve anything. Actions speak louder than words.
And also Eiii, if you had any photoshop talent whatsoever, you would know that that image is not just copy + paste and filters. Maybe when you can make something nearly as good, you can talk. Until then, keep those comments to yourself.

I actually want images as signatures, just not bad enough to sit in here arguing about it when the chances of it happening are very slim, which is the size we would want them, by the way. ;)
Also, it adds to the discussion by allowing us to know a little bit more about that person so that we can adjust our responses accordingly. Avatars serve the same purpose. If they are turned off by default, then the only ones assaulting their sense of sight will be those that wish to.
And to respond to the quote I put above, how long ago was that? People change. And I am incredibly bored right now, being stuck in bed for days isn't very fun.

I wasn't necessarily talking about yours. I was talking about the inevitable flood of crappy sigs that would follow. Also, I just might have to take you up on that photoshop thing.

On a very serious note, I seriously can't wait until this forum is just smeared with picture signatures... there's nothing I love more than scrolling through the same pictures 20 times just to get to the content I want to read...

Not if you have signatures disabled like you should. :P
But really what it boils down to is this: I, and probably the other mods, don't want to have large signatures and other junk taking up 90% of the forum space, but if we have them disabled, they can't be moderated, so somebody could have a huge and annoying signature or possibly something offensive and we wouldn't know about it. Both the examples I've seen are way too large. Do you really need to take up 8-10 square inches of space on my screen just to say your name?
There are thousands of other forums you can go to if you want to see repeated images scattered all over the place with little bits of content in between. This forum is for discussion.
