I will probably get screamed at for this but oh well.
I was pubbing with Kaltorak and Loial and we were talking about how annoying the noobs are and we came up with an idea.
As I mentioned before I think we should have a ranking system similar to Battlefield. Now if that were implemented then we could have servers like Albatross18, where you have to be a certain rank to play on that server.
Just a thought and to me and the other 2 it seemed like a good one.
P.S. We could also do Kaltorak's idea of charging anyone outside the United States to play, to reduce the noob count. ;D <- Just a joke!
-
So basiclly no one would ever play on servers, and to make only EU players pay for US server is for 1: discriminating, 2: vast of the so called noob players come from USA also, 3: there would be no more matches between EU-USA clans (how many is prepared to pay for a match?).
Ranking system could be implemented, but you must think on all of the aspects through.
-
I suggested that if players are annoyed with newbs then they need to have a locked down server running for pro's only.
Edge points are very important, relevent and valid.
Reducing newb count? You are fired.
-
What is with the new trend of cutting out newbs? I doubt discriminating against Europeans will help Paintball 2 at all. Instead newbs and Euros, arguably a majority of our player base, would seek refuge elsewhere, leading to Paintball 2 to lose players but never gain...
-

Nice one KilLo, but the fact I consider you a noob kind of goes against your whole idea doesn't it?
-
No.
-
On what?
-
i think it'd make a lot of new players quit. And the noobs wouldn't learn from anyone if they didn't have any better players to watch in pubs. They would all camp and wouldn't have to bump up there skills since they would only play with others like them.
-
ranking system is an interesting idea.
is it possible to just have a 1 or 2 servers that use a ranking system? while leaving the popular servers rank-free?

That is exactly what I was trying to get at. Have servers that you have to be a certain rank to play but then have more servers for all ranks.

This is such a wonderful idea. Let's segregate dp. An even more interesting question.... Who decides players rank? Wouldn't it hurt your feelings if someone thought you weren't skilled enough to play with a certain group? So in order for people to move up in "rank" they have to have a tryout? Get real. I'm certain each and every player here did not just start playing this game on their first try and already know how to do everything. This nonsense sounds like a bunch of school yard b/s. Please grow up or you will have a vast majority of your fan base leave. Now if a server owner wanted only a selected group to play on their private server then fine. Set a password only you and your elite group know and thats the end. Stay in your own little world and leave the COMMUNITY alone to play how they please.

Why does no one understand the concept of what I am saying? ???

kilo,
I do understand what your saying and I was not trying to flame you in anyway. The easiest way would be to make your own server and password it. That way you can keep all the new players out and allow the ones you want to have access to it in. Most of these "newbs" don't even participate in the forums. Simply make a server and post the password on here for the people who don't annoy you in-game. The problem is when you start a rank system you have to have a basis on which to rank people. There are times when even the great players annoy me. I'd rather play with new people than listen to these elite flame me in game because my skill level improved enough where I can kill them. So how will you rank people? Based on skill or based on all aspects? If you want to be fair you would have to base it on all aspects of public play which would then keep some great players with a horrible mouth out. I'm sure some of your friends on here qualify for that. Would they think highly of you for keeping them out? InT and WsL stand on the basis for teaching new players how to play. Will you keep all of us out or just some of us? I love playing against the better players because it increases my skill. I would not join a Elite player server because not all my friends on here would be able to. Do you not understand that if you make ranking a community wide thing then you will separate people. Why not just do it the easy way? Your own server.
-
You are still missing the point. I get where you are coming from but my idea is a lot different than what you think. Here is what my idea of the ranking system would be (maybe with a few modifications) http://dplogin.com/forums/index.php?topic=9966.0msg101534#msg101534.
All I am saying is that sometimes I feel like playing with people who are better at the game yet those people don't pub because they don' want to play with the newer players. If you had these ranked servers then these players may play more. But the higher ranks could also play in the ranked servers below them. And then there could also be "free-for-all" servers where any rank can play on it.
And then scrimming and matching would be just about the same as it is now (the match servers would be unranked of course).
The way the ranking system would be setup makes it fair for everyone to advance although it may take some people longer.
-
Why does no one understand the concept of what I am saying? ???
Consoles have this kind of rating system, I like it to a certain extent..
I personally think it would be nice to see an optional skill system, where players could select what they think their skill level is (i.e. skill 3) and could join servers with the skill option on (sv_minskill 3 sv_maxskill 4).
This way, there is less bandwidth used for a stats server, and the default skill could be set to 0 or 1 (lowest setting), so noname and newbie(4) who can't figure out to change their name, most likely don't know how to change their skill level.
I digress...
This is a free (as in beer) game, I know newbies can be annoying (have you played with that y00tz guy? He doesn't even know how to get flag 2 in pbc_renoir)... but what good does it do to isolate newbies and Europeans?
Cheers,
y00tz

A few flaws I see kilo is that if you make it community wide then ... 1) you limit the amount of servers new players can play on. 2) other players can easily make their score increase by playing players without the same skill level. 3) if you allow the better players down into pubs where new players are your making it more difficult for the newer players to increase their points. Making the score they need to obtain untouchable. 4) there are too many private owned servers.
other than that .... good idea.
P.S. thanx kilo.. because of this debate I have made it past 100.
-
LOL
Like I said I know there are flaws but I believe most of them can be worked out.
-
Then work out the flaws here, or the idea is a no-go. It's your idea. Use your own brain.
-
Add this to my idea.
-
I think I liked y00tz's on setting what you think your own skill is.
Offtopic: I can show you y00tz its actually easy if you know how.
-
Kilo, your not good. Don't act like you are. You will just get stuck in the newbie servers and cry. Please, think about things before you post. I think flip cleared things up nicely here. End of discussion?
-
Oh snap KiLo, the kid who pretended to be a girl for a year and is currently clanless just told you that you suck... what ever will you do ?! =]
-
what are your parameters for a skilled player? i mean some people can be just so darn lucky at shooting.
defined "skilled" player and maybe you'll be able to convince these people
i personally wanna see more pgp only servers.

DP does not need a ranking system. First of all when the good players want to play, someone gets a pickup game and tells people on IRC. If you had a server where only certain skill level people could join, you're not going to have a very populated server.
Public servers are pretty much the place for newbs to get better, and good players to mess around. I'm sure newbs don't want to see they have a .63 KDR. Most of the good players that pub just mess around (PGP, jump around, etc) I think it would just be pointless to spend time on a ranking system right now when there is so much other stuff that could be done.
And y00tz, are you serious about letting people choose their own skill level? All the newbs would rank themselves the highest rank(except for the occasional honest player like you or m7). Also a good player could just lower their skill level then go into some server and go like 40-2.
-
I believe the only solution to this is to have a pw'd server where only those that want to play wit ha certain level of players can play.
-
darkness's answer is perfect, make a pickup game and post it in different clan's irc's.... 'newbs' arent going to be idling irc anyways.
you seem to be the only one really bothered with them, so you could use darkness's advice and everyone would be happy :)

sounds like an idea... and to only way to get the password is to ask the admin of the server :)

Didn't i say that on my first post on here?
and pink... who do you think should decide the skill level assigned to each player?

Other stuff needs to be done before any sort of ranking system is put into effect.

I would like ranking severs that would be only playable based upon someone's rank.Newbs wouldn't be able to play with us with their low lvl's, while we are the superior players who have a higher lvl,so we play on different servers.Except if you are in a match and your different lvl's, it doesn't matter about that, only if someone with a really low lvl gets in matters, (which I highly dout).Annyways just go for it kilo! I would enjoy that. ;D
-
Mizerakk. When you say "Newbs wouldn't be able to play with us" I hope your not including yourself. Just because you use the forums, does not make you anymore superior then all those other newbies out there.
think of it this way: How did all of you first hone your DP skills? Most likely by watching others, and learning from them. What if all there was to watch was other players of equal skill level? Your performance increase would drastically decrease.
Use your heads people.

But who would really just enter a server to watch? No fun :P

Lmao.
Mizerakk. 1v1 right now. Please Pm me on irc as we have flamed enough on this thread.
I will deal with you as how I deal with any other cocky newbies who think they're good.

We've been talking internally at eR33t about this idea for quite some time.
What is with the new trend of cutting out newbs? I doubt discriminating against Europeans will help Paintball 2 at all. Instead newbs and Euros, arguably a majority of our player base, would seek refuge elsewhere, leading to Paintball 2 to lose players but never gain...
Not that many who have posted in this thread have been here for a long time, but public servers used to be where about 10 people knew howto play PB2 decently (like actually capture a flag or rush to middle), and 2-6 didn't. These days NA servers are 4-6 players who have a good grasp on the game, and 10-26 players who don't speak english and have no idea what they're doing. I'm sure that the europeans have it easier since all the speed servers they have filter out all of the super-newb players, NA only has pub servers with traditional settings all over the place.
The current state of DP's pickup games are pretty pub-centric at the moment anyway. Someone decides to grab a server, /amsg the ip and password and players from IRC connect and disconnect at their leisure. Maybe a few maps get played, generally not the same teams but it is a nice change of pace to be playing with teammates who might recon, or might grab a flag every now or then. Lots of clans are abusing pickup games by grabbing matches from them (much like we used to grab matches from players in pub servers). Even pug organizers are flaking out on pugs two-three minutes into a game because two teams in the pug want to match and it wipes out half of the players. Not very fun. I'd rather have a privatized public server where selected players can come and go as they please, play a few minutes or a few hours, whatever. 75% of the pugs I've been in recently have been killed by a clan match. 75% of the recent public games I've played have been ruined by clueless Brazilians who complain about the long respawn time.
Players just starting out are looking for the most play time possible. Why wait 60s when you can be instantly respawned? I think all of the speed servers are segregating this "community" more then a couple ranked servers where the good players play. These new players are also not going to stick around in a server where they die every round have have to wait 60s for a respawn.
How would new players get on this privatized public server? We'll we'd rely on guys like you and m7feettall who bringing these guys in, getting them on IRC and Vent, and getting them better at the game. I don't think it would be too hard to keep a 12 player server at 50% capacity during peak hours if we only gave 200-300 people access to the server. We used to public servers like this that were constantly packed, when the total active player base in NA alone was just 200-300 people.
-
I think I agree with what Bain is saying. I do know that in order for me to get better when I first started I relied on a lot on playing the more skilled players. I'm at the point where I need more guidance on strategy then anything else. In order to get that I rely on playing against teams like stars. Public servers do get killed by teams joining and then leaving for 1vs1, 2vs2, 3vs3's. Another thing I agree with is having a privatized public server as I mentioned earlier. By giving out the pass to all who are considered descent players. There has been plenty of times where WsL has been doing practice runs on a match server and the team members invite numerous people who are idle in irc. It turns out to be a blast and we run about 4 to 10 maps before people start leaving because of time differences. This morning we had 5 WsL members, Hades, Edge, and Justin5 all playing together. It was a blast. If your interested in playing with a bunch of above average skilled players then idle our channel and ask if we're playing fun games. :P
-
I remember when everyone in pubs would recon.
-
I remember when everyone in pubs would recon.
Yeah that was when I first started. I mean I know that I would recon in pub now I do here and there but usually I don't.
-
From my experience, the newbies don't even seem to use the recon in pubs. Of course, it may be possible they don't even comprehend English very well.
-
The second part of that is so true.
-
I can see where you are coming from that more non-english speaking players now play, but its not very accurate to base the lack of recon in pubs on it. The speed servers may be a better argument. Theres no need to recon in speed servers, and this then gets into the mentality of players when moving away from speed servers.
If people are serious about this, and other ideas, then please think about what you are saying and the points you are trying to make. KiLo, comments like yours above are obviously aimed towards offending and segregating people.
-
You can'T really remove noobs from the game. Those guys are newcomers that will progressively become better and better. To find a method to remove the ''noobs'' would logically be a method to kill the game slowly. If newcomers get kicked off game, they will certainly realize how bad it is to play Dp. So while Noobs are leaving, older players are also quitting + banned players = less and less players == Game Died.
-
but, the thing is, better is playing vs. some one good, your expirence get more then. But ranking idea is cool.
