Hi all,
I'm releasing the first beta of theice4 today (I hope jitspoe doesn't get a heart attack ;D). It's basically theice for up to four teams, so there is much more than one path.
This is actually my first map release, but I'm doing something big these days. I wanted to take a little break and came up with this. The map supports DM, CTF, Elim, 1flag and KOTH for now.
I'm not so sure about the all-autocockers. I'd like to give players a spyder or carbine and hide an autococker somewhere, maybe where the CO2 is currently, but I wanted to hear some opinions on that before I break with the "tradition". ;)
Though the map is wide and open, I managed to keep the maximum polys at around 2000. Average polys are 1200-1500. I'm trying to further reduce this.

It's decided we are now turning The Ice into the next Shazam.
I doubt many people will like it because of its size. The response to this will probably be similar to that of shazam44 or ub_4cliff. And that response it that no one will like it (no offense to you map making skills).
Or it will on be played on servers like the OTB Speed Server, since most maps with four teams are better with shorter respawns (in my opinion).
Edit: Are the ends of those walls ladders because if not it may get rather tough to grab the flag. Also this would probably be better if it was a 4-Way CTF.

Looks good. One suggestion, don't give everybody Autocockers. Carbines would be better. But other than that, I really like this map.

Really fun map really nice work had blast playing this map I like the way you did
Slick floor on this map fun to ice-skate around and jumps are nice also and the boxes good job on them also. Don’t give everybody Auto cockers i would do ladder little diff
but
Just few things I would change the light textures on floor is really nice the color and all but after few games
They start make you have headache the map is little to big and sky
I would make wall to cover up some that sky around the edge of map

I really intended this map to be played with short respawns, so I'd be fine with it running on OTB Speed. And I think the white flag should to be hard to grab so rounds aren't over after a few seconds.
What do you mean by 4-way CTF?

That's what I intended, but I wanted to hear a few opinions. So I'm gonna take the Autos out (even if it would annoy some noobs).

Thanks :). I tried to stick to the original theice theme with the floor and everything. But I might tone down the light a bit.

Pardon the forwardness please consider the same format but with a center flag and call it 'Carnal Aknowledgements'.

What I really like about this map. All 4 corners brushes on floor are perfectly boxed.
The Right way Turn this map on all corners you have perfectly made box

Four flags, one for each team. You already have it 4-way CTF. :P

on open box maps on this game it should be
1248x1248 1348x1348 even thats cutting it close maybe
1536x1536 on open box maps for this game
is just right at range being to big with r_speeds over 1000+
for open box maps
bring down the top sky about halfway it little two tall
that may drop th r_speeds 100
make this map little smaller 1248x1248 to 1378x1378 say r_speeds would drop by 200- 300 maybe more

still lots of room to jump around on the ceiling pertty high up maybe not half but at good 10-15gid

I've changed the autocockers to carbines on spawn; there are autocockers below the crates now. I also added ladders on the four sides of the center wall.
A smaller version of the map (1280 units instead of 1536) is attached. Below are some screenshots. Have fun with it! :)
I would like to hear some opinions - should I use the smaller version or stick with the big one?
@stigma: I don't see how a lower ceiling would decrease the polygon count. Skies do not add to wpoly - I checked that in a test map.
@Clipz: True, I have thought about that. I just couldn't find them anywhere so if they object to the map name, I'll change it.

you need to rotate the wood on the ladders, otherwise it looks fine right now.

That's how the original The Ice was so I don't see a problem with it.

I don't see a problem either. But if anything, put a glass wall around it.

And in order to enforce the desired effect, you'd have to make a really high fence, as high as you can jump. Which would be very ugly.
EDIT: Anything like this would also boot the r_speeds. I tried Zorch's idea (which i like other than that) and polygons went up by 200-300.

Eww. Yea, just don't put a wall around it. It looks good the way it is now.

Just because the original theice looked ugly doesn't mean this one has to, too. :P
stigma: Lowering the ceiling won't do anything to the r_speeds. It's all sky. Sky polygons aren't drawn.
Even though I hate box maps, I'll put it up on the beta server for testing. Check your PM's in a bit.
Edit: It's actully kind of fun in DM mode with 3 or 4 people. I can't imagine it working very well for more than that.

I made another version two weeks ago, never gotten around to releasing it. Probably played too much ;D
- fixed ladder textures
- perfected box textures
- decreased color saturation a bit
- mapinfo file is attached (0-8 players, ctf, dm)
This could be the final version, objections?
