Title: DP2Demo2AVI 0.5
Post by: ViciouZ on July 15, 2007, 02:14:45 PM
Don't use this, it's shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit.

I've spent the best part of today making a special script for the generation of DP movie makers that has sprung up recently. Due to the fact FRAPS takes a user to operate, and many retries to get the perfect shot, I've created an alternative, which does not require a user to control the process. Using default settings, this script will convert a dm2 file to a XviD .avi file at a selectable fps, resolution and bitrate, good settings for making a youtube video. You can leave this on and go out, there is no need to stop/start recording.

Neat idea, if you learn how to add GUIs, will you remaster all the DP* stuff? I'd love to see it.

V,

Have you checked the licensing of all of those progies?

Just checking..

Yep. Mencoder, DP & XviD = open source, PictView32 and MAKEAVI.EXE are reditributable freeware.

I'm working on it.

Anyway, for people who want to use this app, you might as well wait til tomorrow because i just worked out a fix that could reduce encoding time by up to 25%.

Due to the fact FRAPS takes a user to operate, and many retries to get the perfect shot, I've created an alternative, which does not require a user to control the process. Using default settings, this script will convert a dm2 file to 320x240 XviD .avi file at 30fps, good settings for making a youtube video. You can leave this on and go out, there is no need to stop/start recording.

default settings? where can I change those?
I went ahead and tried it, the AVI file looks good, but very low resolution and no sound.  And, major problem: it only converted about half of the demo ... ::(
Title: Re: DP2Demo2AVI 0.1
Post by: ViciouZ on July 15, 2007, 05:03:10 PM
The settings will be changeable in v0.2. Basically, if the resolution was 640x480, you'd need a pretty darn new PC with 40GB free space to use it.

I don't know about the half the demo problem... did you close the window half-way through? Did the window freeze at any point? Does the file skip about? Did you run out of disk space? You may have hit the animdump file limit. Try recreating the error please.

Unless jitspoe makes a sound dump feature soon, I don't really see how sound will be recordable without windows getting in the way. I'll see what I can do.

Cant you run some background process that records sounds?
Title: Re: DP2Demo2AVI 0.1

Yeah, but as I said, windows will get in the way, so If i was watching porn listening to the levellers while it worked, the sound would be fooked up.

but those probably don't have much to do with the shortened encoding.  I tried encoding the same demo again - again only half of it was converted.  17 GB space left, that shouldnt be the problem.
Could you convert a larger demo please and check the values during the encoding?
I had 28,000 anim jpg files for a 15 minute demo, animdump limit?... no idea what else I could do.  Maybe I'll try another demo tomorrow.
Oh, and I didn't touch the stuff while it was converting.  Btw, does it make use of multiple CPUs?

I tried it with a 20min demo and worked perfectly.
The only thing is that it takes REALLY to much time.
I'm pretty sure it take more than half an hour.

Anyway, Good job.
Title: Re: DP2Demo2AVI 0.1
Post by: ViciouZ on July 16, 2007, 12:02:02 PM
Currently, It only uses 1 CPU. I've also discovered a large flaw and it should cut encoding time by a quarter. No idea what the problem is with yours, b00n. (sadly.)
Title: Re: DP2Demo2AVI 0.1
Post by: b00nlander on July 16, 2007, 03:00:19 PM
well, today I tried a different demo (double the size, ~1 MB), and...  first it put more than 30 GB on my disk and then it didnt even make the AVI
I hope you can fix that.
Oh, btw, this time it opened the game in Fullscreen (1280x1024) first, and then I went in the settings and changed it to 640x480, so that probably explains the amount of data. But why did it open in fullscreen?

No idea at all. Were you using the paintball2.exe file at any point?
I am uploading now a new version which reduces encoding time 80% and includes sound and changeable settings! :D :D :D :D :D

edit:

Version 0.4!

Smaller, slicker, easier, quicker, customisable and less stuff to go wrong! Plus super-buggy sound.

b00nlander: try this one.

I did not touch a single file, and not paintball2.exe

looks like your bunch of programs thrown together are still quite buggy  ^^

and reducing filesize would be better than reducing encoding time :P

The game dumps in TGA... if jits could make it dump jpgs, then this would be even less likely to go wrong.

it did, in fact, create the demo.  but only 2/3 of it, because after that, some maximum for the TGA files was reached if I remember correctly. Also, the movie's quality is bad because of the jpg files :P  can you not increase the jpg's quality or convert to something better? I'd rather have a larger than a bad quality movie (or at least have a choice :P)

They do, and Notepad++ has more features, but I hate how it looks >_> I don't need most of the features anyway, though. The only thing I desire in any programming editor, though, is well written FTP support. I haven't seen a light editor with that functionality; all of them use the same thread for the GUI and what else to do the transfer. I want to be able to continue editing as it saves too.

Can someone upload the output of a short demo?

I don't have a windows system with a decent 3d card to run this myself.  How is the sound capture in terms of sync with video capture.  It would not be too difficult to hack in some aviexport code which produces a .tga or .jpg image for each frame like what's found in many other games.  There are plenty of opensource/freeware tools that are able to turn these into an .avi.  The benefit of this is a constant (and adjustable) framerate, and the ability to do post-engine graphic transformations like adjust colours or light levels before the images are actually encoded.  I think that keygrip2, combined with an aviexport-like video source and some commercial editing software could produce some very high quality videos.

After stumbling across a few hidden gems this morning while looking for something else, I plan on going home tonight and putting together a quick proof of concept which I hope will completely change the way PB2 is "watched".

1. The game does export TGAs for each frame, this is how my tool works.
2. It uses freeware tools to turn them into an AVI already.
3. It already has an adjustable framerate.
4. Pre-encoding graphic transformations are possible with this.
5. All of the above should be obvious if you read the whole thread.

And, err, the linux bit may be fixed soon.

edit2: The sync is good as long as the settings are within easy reach of the performance of the computer.

Bain, I have tried this tool, used 25fps, resolution 800x600 at 4096kb/s, which produced a very nice demo (over 300mb for 11 Minutes, so I will not upload it). Have yet to change to 2048kb/s and check the if its cutting down enough on size to allow for the lower quality. someday.

I just knew that you first attempt used Fraps, and wasn't aware that you were using frame dumps in later versions.  Are the frame dumps native to DP or are you using another program to take captures at x fps?

ok i downloaded this and tried it out. output folder is empty. i dont know much about kb/s and all that jazz so i just pressed enter when that option came up. i set the recording length to 20min(may have been too long) didnt hear any sound at all. and was wondering if i could add my texture and pic folders to the program? or would that disturb something? anyways i will mess with it some more tonight after i get home from school. really anxious to see the output of this.

The output folder is empty because you didn't supply a bitrate, and no sound because the sound was turned off by default. I'm making a build with various updates right now so those problems will be solved. And yes, you can add your texture and pic folders to the program.

Was your computer actually reaching whatever FPS you set it to? If not, that is why it is fast forwarding.

some reason my post was deleted or i never posted it and was just dreaming. but i set it to 200 fps( because thats what i get on average ) and it recorded with 40 and less. it was a 17 min demo and played as a 2 min video. and quality was horrible. so i dont know ill mess with it a bit more and see what happens.

OK, for FPS, 200 is insane, put more like 20, because it's what you want out, not what you get. For bitrate, a good place to start is 1024kb/s. And you should probably keep the resolution down.

I compared 1024 kb/sec to 2048 kb/sec and 20 fps to 30...

..and my conclusion: You will have a good output if you set 1024 kb/sec and 20 fps.

Ps: better now magal? =P I had added stuff later to it so it got confusing
