i would like to know if someone could make a version 2 of an already in existence map. are all maps gpl-ed or do u have to get exclusive rights. i would really like to know. i was wondering because the shazam maps aeem to have like 15 versions all made by different people. if u are unclear what i am asking a good example would be like how back2back exists, could i make a back2back 2. i do not actually want to make back2back 2, i just want to know in general about making new maps and mapping rights. thanx in advance

dont make a remake unless its better than the original.

It is impossible to copyright ideas, so you can copy any map layout you want. That means that you need to start from scratch.
But, as p!ink pointed out, its common courtesy to ask before.

Also, I think what was being discussed is decompilation of maps.

thank you everybody for responding. i was sort of discussing decompilation of a map, but only to create a newer version titled whatever 2. i was just wondering how things like shazam became shazam(1 - 50) with different original makers. i understand now how it works. if i ever felt the need to create a new version of a map, i would ask the original maker first.

I think of someone thinks they can do a better job, they should come up with a new name for it... adding "2" to the end leaves no room for the original author to make a sequel. If you do something like cus_MapName and made the map with the similar flow but a lot more detail and better texture choices, I don't think that there'd be a big uproar.
Decompiling is going to make enemies for you though.

Most of the shazam remakes were made from scratch. If you compare something like shazam33 to shazam, you'll notice none of the original brushwork is there. Decompiling maps is really bad practice. If the mapper hasn't provided the .map source, then he/she probably doesn't want people editing it without permission. GPL-ing maps is a pretty recent practice, so most maps aren't released under the GPL.
It's best to just be original. Make something new. Something better than previous maps.

Umm there is only shazzam, shazzam22, shazzam33, and shazzam44 cuso the guy who made it just decided to do double numbers.

I think there are 3 or 4 ub_cliff maps...a good map to think about remaking would be ub_rooftop...but thats just my opinion.

There already is ub_rooftop 2 inprogress warwulf is making it though last I heard he hadn't done very much.

I think the sequels to maps should be bigger...just because its a sequel.

well personally, i think decompilation of maps is terrible if u are just going to rip off it, but decompilation for learning i believe is very helpful. the shazam 1-50 was just an overexageration, and yes jitspoe i did notice that shaz 33 is quite dissimilar to the original shazam. thanx everyone for posting, this has really cleared up my questions. ;D
