Title: Unofficial Feature Vote of 2007
Post by: y00tz on September 19, 2007, 04:14:38 PM
This is a list of things that could be completed by members, i.e. stuff that isn't code/build related. For example, something that the community could benefit from, yet there would be no reason to require Jitspoe/a developer to do.

Examples of this would be:

- a re-organized/designed menu system (Zorchenhimer has done this)
- an online server browser (sk89q has done this).

I guess if you see something on the list that you could do, do it and post it here so we can  take it off the list.

A decent KOTH map to showcase the gamemode and make it more popular

And a button that forces y00tz onto an IM program

Seconded.

@ Everyone:  By the way, feel free to update tallies etc.  But I'd like to see it done only once or so per page or 20 posts.

Definitely need more KOTH maps. The only one I can think of off the top of my head besides KOTH is Routez.

Here's something I've been working on for a while, but due to time, I'd like to throw it out for anyone else to work on.  I've been writing a map-editing program in C++/OpenGL and was considering a port to Java (for every OS that supports Java)

I'd love to see a cross-platform map-editing program SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED FOR PAINTBALL 2.

If done correctly, an advantage to this is that if we ever switched map formats, we'd have an editor that merely required minor tweaking.

I'd also like to see a compatibility-mode that allowed for merely 2D editing for slower computers...

Anyway, there's a lot more planning that has gone into this, and if anyone would like documentation on the BSP format, be sure to PM me.

I really don't see what's wrong with BSP. I don't get how you could customize it any more for DP, that is, except making entity placement more user-friendly. And by user-friendly, I mean idiot-friendly.

Agreed, BSP is great already, and if you really really want a BSP specifically designed for DP then you can just take the current BSP source and add your own changes.

I agree with Eiii and Cobo. There's no need to re-invent the wheel, and I myself sure would not want to use any mapping program made in Java.

Too bad its not open source. :-\

Except it is. Well, the source is avaiable. Just because something isnt GPL'd doesnt mean that the program is not worth using.

Really? Sweet. Link?

None.  You have to put up with the current source-holder saying "Umm, it's not clean enough"

He usually hangs out in #level_design or whatever with LordHavoc and what not.  Best of luck, if ya get it, pass it along.

Cusoman suggested an updater for DP, one of you want to develop a quick and dirty updater?

I could just add on to DPGet easily but what's the point? When you start an out of date build a message usually pops up. What's so hard to do?

Can executables be run, or triggered, in-game?  If so, I could just add a "check for updates" button that starts up an auto updater.

No and yes.  No by conventional means, and yes for anti-cheat measures (won't discuss so don't ask).  There is a way to launch a web browser with a specified link, but I thought this was already being used for update (you have an old version, click here to update...) purposes.  The problem with an auto-update system is who is going to front the cost for bandwidth?  We're pretty lucky to have a sourceforge workspace, after the B19 release SF alone served up 1TB worth of 20MB downloads.

You could have something like this so it does it automatically....
Code: [Select]
if gamemode==64 add pongI know that wouldn't work but been a while since I've done anything like that or anything period in C I just made it basic so its easy to understand and (yes I probably did alot of stuff wrong).

That would be awesome if it worked like that.  But alas, the menu's scripting language is primitive at best.

Is there anyway to translate that from C to menu or make it so you can put it in C and the menu understands it I've heard of things that can do this from language to language for other things. Also what language is the menu just its own?
Title: Re: Unofficial Feature Vote of 2007
Post by: Zorchenhimer on November 27, 2007, 06:46:39 PM
The menu system has it's own scripting language.  If you want me to be able to make menus with that kind of stuff in it, vote for it.  ;)

Yes I did.  Just didn't directly say so.  It's not possible to do what you are asking.

As many of you know, I make very small maps for holidays. I make the maps small in filesize because of the download rates, but build 20 is about to change all of that, so I just thought I'd show you the little KotH/Hannukah map I made.

For those who have played July42007, you know it's fun to turn on DM or whatever and play a map you're not used to, in a pub with 15+ players.  :P

Supports KotH only, requires CTP1 textures, not included.

The sky round the edge of the map. It is made by six images, one on each side of a 'box' of sky.

Man, that just reminded me of an idea that I had a long time ago, couldnt make it work tho but it would be awesome if modifications to the client could be made to make it work.
My idea was to create a skybox, and then use a render script to make the skybox have animation, wouldnt that be awesome?

Cobo that would be awesome.  With some moving clouds, water and such.  It could give some more sense of reality to the game, and would pull it farther from its Q2 origins.  I am wondering if some rscripts could do the job, it can make moving fire.

I too suck at rscrips :P I cant even get one to work.  I tried to make my own rain with rscripts, but that failed.  The resource site didn't help me much with rscripts, can someone tell me how i would make moving images such a rain.  And y00tz mentioned texture blending was possible with rscripts? If we could harness texture blending, mapping quality would go up immediately.
