What IRC program are you using and what is the footprint?
« on: December 13, 2007, 12:00:25 PM »
I am trying to decide what irc client to recommend for my clan members.

Please list what program you use and what portion of memory it takes up. (For windows XP users you can find the answer to the second question by hitting control, alt, delete and going to the "Processes" tab.

Then find the program and the amount of memory being used.

I am using Icechat. It is free, and works great for me. It uses 11,540 K

mIRC, 14mb of memory, but I have customised it to the max with image backgrounds and shizzle. Don't know whether the images are loaded into memory or not.

mIRC.

For beginners its very basic. I suggest mIRC too, cause once you run out of tryout days, you can still use it.

mIRC FTW
Or icechat

DO NOT SUGGEST dotIRC though.

I use XChat, but that's for Linux.  I'd suggest mIRC for Windoze users, although I haven't tried any other IRC client.  :P

I use Konversation. But then again, you with your GNOMEish ways can't use it.

i use mIRC with channel buffers of 10,000 lines and logging on, and i'm usually connected to 3 servers and 14 channels.  for me iit uses 7.2 mb of memory even when un-minimized.  mirc is also undoubtedly the most popular w32 irc client around, so help and addons are very abundant.

mIRC is the way to go, its very basic and the most widely known client with the most addons/scripts for it.

So it sounds as though mirc is pretty light on memory usage.

Now I just have to decide whether to put up with the nagging on buying the thing.

Chatzilla/Xchat (aren't they basically the same thing?) have windows ports, but kind of suck compared to mirc.  I use mIRC with custom scripts to make it look pretty.  Not sure on the memory footprint since it's on the computer that's packed away right now.
