56k WARNING - HEAVY ON THE PICTURES

All I can say is wow.

Impressive is an understatement.

Too bad the US killed the SSC back in '93.

What exactly does it do aside from helping with physics experiments?

This is really built for one specific physics experiment-- They're trying to create a particle that hasn't been seen yet, but has to exist to confirm some current theory.

* Zorchenhimer waits for them to open up a portal to Hell.

Anybody find it ironic that KnacK is giving 56k warnings? :)

Reddit sent them a crowbar.

You know, in case they accidentally open a portal to another dimension or whatever it was.

"Prepare for Unforeseen Consequences..."

I lol'd.

Those pictures give me inspiration for a railgun texture...

Bing! Look like the thing works without anything exploding. Pretty impressive, really.

In other news, they've got some really nice webcams up looking inside the thing.

The fear was that it'd create a black hole when turned on, but that didn't happen so we're good... for now. As far as I know the experiment hasn't been done yet, I believe it takes 1-2 weeks to get the atom going the speed of light before they collide it to try and recreate the big bang theory. It's really a fascinating breakthrough, whether it works or not.

Actually, if the experiment works, it'd create mini black holes that could still prove disastrous. It'd be funny actually, mostly in the sense that doomsday will start in a neutral country =]

There's no freaking way the mini black holes can sustain themselves. 'Mini black hole' is just crazy-talk for 'A single really, really, really dense point'. Honestly, I think when the time comes that something's gonna break, just because projects of this scale never work.

I thought the fear was that it'd happen after it hit full "power" (for lack of a better term on my end) in a few months.

The real experiment happens on the 21st, as I understand it.

It's like a stupid test! The severity of the reaction of the person watching is exponentially related to how dumb they are. :3

they only test fired it yesterday. i believe they only sent the particles one way. the actual test won't happen for another few weeks. i heard that each time they do it, it will get faster and faster.

Another dimension? Hell? Awesome. My generation loved playing Doom. I think I'll walk around my fortress here in the rockies and make sure everything is locked and loaded. Give me a call when the creatures of hell eat your family.
