Seems to me theres been a dramatic decline in IRC usage in the past years, especially months.

Could be because the graphics aren't so hot and newer chat clients have emoticons instead of ASCII figurines.

Could be because of this twat community who !kb's all the other twats.

Actually Iced he has a point there. On alot of the IRC servers, there are more than 200 people, in every channel alone.

well 30 idlers doesnt make a channel active but usually a chan with 30 idlers means it is active, i mean who wants to idle a dead channel anyways? you might not say anythring but you would like to read what other people are talking about

iced... Honestly if you go to gamesurge... There are channels with 1,000 people in it and actually talking. Most channels get a quote bot or a quiz bot and that gets the channel active.

I voted for retry.

Joke or not, activity has certainly dropped off recently. There are about the same number of idlers, but not much chat. I think a lot of the activity has just relocated to the forums. It also doesn't help that virus scanners and firewalls have a bad habit of blocking IRC ports by default.
