Firefox using 100% cpu?
« on: February 13, 2009, 08:42:51 PM »
My computer is basically a whole piece of excrement because its so old, and having this problem makes it completely unusable.  Its only just started a couple of weeks ago and its just so annoying.  I start up firefox and it jumps straight to 200,000k plus.  I have no idea whats doing it, and every search I've done on Google hasn't helped me.  I havn't updated any addons on firefox recently, and I'm not sure if its done any updates on it yet.

Firefox has automatic updates. Try Tools>Options>Advanced>Update tab

Most likely memory leaks.

*edit - I was gonna say you sure do keep a bunch of crap running, but I just noticed that I have ~68 processes running :P  good reminder to clean up.

Yeh...... thanks Jus.

I installed the Leak Detection and when I opened and closed tabs it just went crazy.  Is there a fix for it?  Because I've been updating firefox whenever a new version comes out.

edit:  this is what i got from just closing my myspace home page (1st one) and the other is me loading a facebook app.  When i load myspace apps, if i make the leak box full screen, its 3 times the length of the screen.

What version of FF are you running?  I was having this issue with one of the earlier FF3 versions.

Perhaps try Opera?  Opera used to be decent, but it's gone down hill recently. :\

Firefox tends to be enough of a resource hog that running it on older computers sometimes isn't an option-- I'd recommend another browser, but I can't think of any decent lightweight ones. :(

I used Opera the past 3-6 months since Firefox was crashing on my Vista x64. I have Windows7 so I'm back to Firefox.   The only thing I now miss from Opera is Mouse-Gestures, which can be gotten as add-ons in Firefox.

I tried Google Chrome for a bit, but it didn't at the time have addons that I wanted.  And I'm never going to IE7, but I may try out Opera, just gotta dl it first :).

Got Opera, and the first thing I notice is all of these adds.  All of the possible ways of doing it, will take me too long and i really cbf.  Is there an addon or any excrement that will block em or does it have to be done the long way :\.

Cameron,

One thing I have noticed, and I'm in the same boat as yourself, is that ANY page with ANY kind of flash ad, javascript running, or other crap like that loads up the mem and cpu.

Flashblock and Adblock will save your life. Since I've installed adblock many pages load about twice as fast, it's fantastic.

I use only Opera :)

Opera has them since version 5.0, u dont need an addon for it.
Activate: Tools > Preferences > Advanced > Fast Access

U can use the urlfilter.ini or an user javascript.
Filter: http://www.fanboy.co.nz/adblock/opera/
Script: http://lexi.ucoz.ru/opera/adblock_setup.zip

Another good user javascript:

I meant that I miss Opera's mouse gestures now that I use Firefox again.

mmm, it went up when I used java and flash apps, but I've got all of the ads blocked. I had another little play around with it last night and found these settings for about:config in Google, can't remember what they both do though :/.  Seems to work :)

With opera, I just go to tools, quick preferences, and uncheck gif animations and plugins.  Makes browsing much more enjoyable.  If you need flash, you can just temporarily re-enable it.  I usually just leave them disabled then open flash links in firefox.  Firefox doesn't leak too bad if you just have one site open, then close it.

Well, that script that Terrorist provided seems to work, so Firefox < Opera :).  Firefox just seems to still be a problem, so byebye.  Thanks guys.  And I will do what u said Jits if i see some ads constantly :P.
