Quite the opposite.  The Internet is self healing to a major extent.

Oh, the only virus that's ever posed an actual threat to the internet was that first DNS-poisoning one. And that was really more of an exploit.

EDIT: To be clear, the internet isn't poorly protected. Your computer may be poorly protected. Some webservers may be poorly protected. But the internet, as a whole, remains relatively unscathed. The worst thing that can happen to it is censorship.
