Linux Server

Been having a problem running a pball server in linux. I can and have run many quake2 servers in linux with no problems what so ever, however, when i start up a pball server, it starts, etc etc, seems to be running but when i type "status" in the console i get "no server running"  does anyone have any idea why this is happening? I have tried everything I can think of with no luck what so ever. Any help would be appreciated  :-/

this is the command line i use to start it :

./quake2 +set dedicated 1 + set game pball + exec server.cfg

pretty standard startup, q2 runs BUT, it doesn't run a server for some reason

and yes i have the latest linux binaries etc etc
