ipod to pc transfer
« on: July 18, 2011, 09:43:45 PM »
Does anyone know of any free ipod touch to pc transfer utilities? I just installed a new hard drive and want to get all the music off my ipod but i can only find trial versions that limit it to 250 songs.

I did it once before with an iPod classic. You don't need external software I know that. Keep looking on google?

Yeah I know you can do it with ipod classic but more modern ipods you can't do that. I've been through like 3 or 4 programs already.

You don't need any tools to transfer songs from an Ipod to PC.  Just browse the Ipod through my computer, enable hidden files and you will find all of your songs.  The names will only show as 4 random characters so you have play them through Itunes, or rename each one.

The only bad thing about doing it that way is it appears as that name in iTunes (as far as I remember, did it a couple of years back), and they all have to be renamed.

No they have the correct name if you play them in Itunes.  If you use anything else you will have to rename all songs.

I believe Ubuntu (and most other versions of Linux) has the ability to do what you want 'out the box'

I use rhythmbox and in Ubuntu 11.04 with an ipod touch - file names are correct...

maybe the names are stored in the file and you can read them with a software like this:
http://www.mp3tag.de/en/download.html

Does this application rename the songs automatically?

Just searched a little bit and found this Page (in German):
http://www.tippscout.de/mp3-files-titel-alben-und-interpreten-schnell-erfassen-und-aendern_tipp_2878.html
the 4. point.
Translated it means, you can rewrite the file name, when you load all songs you want to rename and then mark them. then you have to click on "Convert" - "Filename - Tag" or just Press Alt + 2
then you can enter some variables like:

%artist% - %album% - $num(%track%,2) - %title%

and the song / all songs you marked will be renamed in e.g.:

Ben Harper - Burn to Shine - 01 - Alone.mp3
Ben Harper - Burn to Shine - 02 - The Woman in You.mp3

Hope that helped :D
