jump! Dedicated
« on: July 14, 2006, 01:20:17 AM »
After wasting 2 weeks of paid rental time dealing with a knows-crap-about-servers tech rep, I've finally got a semi-working jump server up and runnin'. It doesn't show up in the serverlist, despite the fact that the logs state it's sending a heartbeat successfully, but with all the newbie crap that these servers have, I wouldn't be surprised if the problem is on their end.

Server: 216.15.144.170

The Idiot Tech Rep From Hell (TITRFH) has informed me that there are allegedly no firewalls on their system. The only other thing I could think to be blocking it was the mod they have installed, Q2Admin. I've just had that uninstalled, and the problem is persisting. My problem seems to be similar to that post, but in this case my server isn't even getting put on the serverlist. Gah. I just wasted 60 bucks on a piece of crap.

Could be a routing issue.  I remember somebody tried to set up a server with some hosting like that and they had a freakish setup where, somehow, the IP that you connected through, and the IP of the server were different.

Yes. That is exactly what is happening. Thanks for confirming my fears that I just wasted $60.

Can you get them to host it on a specific port and use port forwarding?

I'm in the middle of writing an email to the TITRFH, but I don't exactly understand what you're suggesting. What port should they use and what should I be telling them? 'Jitspoe told me to tell you to host it on a specific port and use port forwarding!'? :P

If you set the port to 12345, for example, on the paintball server, you could set the router to forward UDP traffic on port 12345 to the ip of the machine running the paintball server.  If they host quake2 servers, using the default port (27910) would probably be a bad idea.

Woot! I was checking my config file just to check up, and I noticed it was different from my local copy. Hmm... Lo and behold, upon opening it, it had this line:

"set ip 216.15.144.170"

Remove it, and it sends its REAL IP (216.15.144.150) to the masters. How did this innocuous line mysteriously get placed into my config file? How did the admins not notice this strange turn of events? I definitely will not be hosting with this company again. In any case, the server appears fine on the masters, so go ahead and update your serverlists and have fun :)

Wonder if DAVEW was using the same company you used, because he had the same issue and they were putting the "set ip ..." in the config.

Yeah, I'm not sure. I was really stupid for choosing this company -- just from their site/forums red flags were going off. 90% of their posts were in the 'Hall of Shame' and the company was notorious for suing people who tried to get a refund and canceled the payments from Paypal/CC. But to be honest, they were cheap. And that was all I cared about, hehe.
