hey i dont know how many old school player know about this but you can zoom in and out in pb2. yea thats right zoom in and out. to do so all you have to do is
"bind (key) set fov 60" and then "bind (key) set fov 90" 90 is norm mode btw
you can also change it to anything like fov 30 to zoom in more and fov 120 to zoom out more.
i know know how many guys/gals will use this but its a old school trick i just rememberd

I never found zooming to be very useful. I tinkered with it back in the 320x240 days of quake, but at 1024x768 you can see people further away than paintballs can shoot, so... *shrug*

i can see peeps just fine at long ranges too but the farther away he is the harder it is to hit him but with fov its easy. + its easyer to aim in small holes to get that camper.

used to use it...on some of the big maps, fov 1 is alot.

You can also set it to be a single key by a script like this:
bind mouse2 +zoom
alias +zoom "fov 10"
alias -zoom "fov 90"

Press the 2nd mouse button and you zoom in. Release it and you zoom out.

For a good zoom script you need to lower sensitivity, mightI recommend this one I have lying around from a different game

bind "mouse2" +snipe
alias +snipe "norm_set;snipe_set"
alias -snipe "re_set"
alias snipe_set "hand 2;fov 10;sensitivity 1"
alias norm_set "set _hand $hand;set _fov $fov;set _sens $sensitivity"
alias re_set "set hand $_hand;set fov $_fov;set sensitivity $_sens"

Its fully functional in Pb I tried it before I posted.

fov 10 is alot for most pb maps fov 60 is good for 90% of the maps

If you have a mouse wheel you can use the wheel to zoom in and out incrimentally. So you can just zoom in a bit in tighter spots, and zoom in more in wider open areas.

its not on some maps but some maps its good
i started to use it and i have allmost dubled my kills per game

You can still do it. There's always been an option for quake2 servers to disable changing FOV's, but I've never actually seen servers with that limitation on.

this was used on dark q2 wod maps, I never used complexed binds but I know those that would camp in a extra dark places and snipe with rail, disrupter, freeze gun, or snipen shorgun its black ball barly visable. It was normally double binded with the push/pull on a bound toggle key usally mouse 3 this was before 7.4 q2 WOD very very effective on OUTLANDS.bsp Dragon showed me how to camp by the rocket by rail and pick off people going for the rail. Sneaky but it one of the most effective tricks in q2 team play even though he complained that I need to learn more complex binds

. Sniper class anything promote good team work.
