Do not get maxtor.
I have two Maxtors pushing 8 years right now and a pile of dead WD's that didn't last a year. What do you got?

Internal.  USB drives are prone to failure, regardless of which brand you get.  I'd go with a seagate, personally, since they have 5 year warranties, and I've seen far too many maxtors and WD's fail.

My friend tried installing Ubuntu on his spare machine, but it kept locking up.  GG Linux stability.  Hopefully you'll have better luck.

I can't get XP nor Win2K on my 333MHz box, I get BSOD'd every time after install. Running Edgy-Eft on it fine though, Linux stability, eh, Jitspoe?

In my personal experience, Windows (after 2k/xp) has been more stable than Linux.  I'm sure other people have had different experiences, though.  What do you have in your 333MHz box, anyway?

Almost nothing (as in I took out the RJ-11 card, soundblaster, and the PCI-IDE raid stuff) its a stripped down Gateway 2000 (model #, not year). 333MHz CPU, 384MB RAM, the stock DVD-rom drive, nvidia RIVA TNT2, some legacy 3-com ethernet card, and I tried a bunch of different hard drives and none made a difference.

Is the memory bad, maybe?  Try running memtest?

Nah, they work fine, tested the HDD's and the RAM (3 sticks of 128MB), all the same brand ram (stock) and they all work. I stripped stick #3 out of another Gateway 2k, I don't even know why whenever someone gives me a box, it's always a Gateway 2k...
