It depends on what offers are going on and what you'd put in your homebrew, I'd advise against Dell though. I'm a hater, and I laugh every time I hear of one of their laptops blowing up on the news, or every time I get a call from a neighbor saying that their Dell wipes any USB-device they plug into it. Yeah, they have "support", but it usually turns out to be the same support as BestBuy in some areas: "We don't do house calls under your protection plan, so you can either drop it off at one of our retailers and wait a couple months to get it back, or pay $50 an hour for a technician to come and try to fix it", in many cases they'll try to talk you into buying excrement that you don't need. Pre-made PCs also come crammed with plenty of apps that you won't be touching. If you do end up getting a pre-made box, wipe it and install your OS fresh.

well if you go dell the problem is most of them you can't upgrade b/c they don't give you any extra ports and everything is on the motherboard. It does make it cheaper ,but i think it truly depends on what you want out of it. I am thinking a soon as i get a job. I am going to start building a computer and if you build a computer the first thing to buy is an Nvidia gefore 9800!!! and make sure you power supply can support everything you put in it.

I agree with IronFist, eMachines are good. Dell is a ripoff name, and costs too much for what you get. Look into an eMachine or Systemax or something where you'll get the most hardware for your money.

You'll need a 10,000watt PSU to support the GeForce 9800. It is still a pre-prototype model, so it has some power consumption problems.

Anyway, I'd suggest building a computer if you have the money. I learned a lot, and have a wonderful computer now. :D

Smokey only made this cause he wants to prove me wrong by getting everyone to say dells suck. The only reason I want a dell is for the xps systems. I planned on getting the like 2500 dollar xps system, that comes with dual 512mb 7900's, 2 gigs of ram, 320gb hd, AGEIA PhysX physics accelerator from what I read is reallyyyy good and a lot of other goodies. I also mainly want it because if I were to build a comp and put it together and something go wrong etc, I dont have a warranty.

Custom order one that's better than the XPS for cheaper? I know plenty of kids who just picked out the parts for their boxes and then got them assembled and warrantied by the people who put it together. If you're interested in spending $2,500 then you should do that.

My mom has a special deal through her job that makes the total cost of the computer less, about 300 dollars less. I don't want to custom order one and pick out every piece and nananana. I want it prebuilt, ready to go, ready to play. I have a dell now and I've never had a problem with it.

The problem with pre-built ones is that it seems like they would be harder to upgrade to me. I couldn't do anything but add RAM to my last machine, and with this computer and can swap almost anything out. It'll last a long time, I can just upgrade it as the quality of various parts increase.

Uh, when games/software that require more power than your computer has in the future, you may want to make your computer more powerful to be able to play those games/use that software.

Unless you want to buy a whole new computer everytime you become dissatisfied with your current one.
