Proof of Concept: Fairground Ferris Wheel
« on: September 10, 2007, 01:52:11 PM »
Hey all,

After reading this thread, I was curious about how it might work so I've knocked up this rough proof of concept of a ferris wheel in action.

This map shows why such a thing is a nice idea but doesnt really work very well (actual gameplay aside!). It looks good and I think its worth taking a look at the map so you can experience it yourself.

The results show your man can spasm a bit due to the motion of the carriages, the motion of the wheel isn't 100% smooth because of the slow speed the entity must have just so the carriages don't whizz round at 100mph and the entity is very difficult to light (so apologies for the darkness in the screenshots!).

I've packaged up the BSP and .MAP file for people to play with, anyone can feel free to mess about with it or even use it in their map if they think they are skilled enough to make it into something worthwhile.

download: HERE.

Hope you like it, especially Gir who started the thread that inspired me to waste a few hours of my life entertaining this crazyness.

- Dr Rick Dagless MD

p.s don't fret, Zen_b2 is on its way.

edit: sorry, broke the bsp! fixed now.

You can build most anything- the really tough part is getting it to play well.

That aside, nice work.

I once made a ride, though not on tracks, that is like E.T. You start on ground... and then you fly into the skies...

haha that was quite funny, and it shows the problem that strikes me when making a roller coaster - I dont know whether you can change the orientation of your carriage. For the ferris wheel that was great as the 'cars' never would be upside down, they'd always hang down, whereas a rollecoaster would need to change its orientation when going round corners, etc..

At first I thought you were apply reverse rotation on the ferris wheel cars (to counter-act the rotation on the wheel itself), but then I thought about the much easier approach.

Hey, Dr Rick! I made a small expansion of your park, but I need some help. If anyone can tell me how to fix this, please do! Screens of problem areas:

WTF!? trees keep falling from the sky!

weird unchangeable polygon

(oh noes spoilers) The yellow buiding is a dunk tank game. I lure players up there w/ an autococker, a hopper, a barrell, and some co2. onto a trapdoor. hehehe...
/spoilers

just some help on fixing this would be appreciated.

Hmm unchangeable polygon? looks like you've slightly altered one of the brushes that make up the func_rotate that makes up that half of the wheel.

can you select the dodgy brush in BSP? if so try and reform it back to its original shape, but from you saying its 'unchangable' i guess you might be having problems with that.

If you are still having problems with it, post the .map and ill give it a once over for you.

ok,

Ive fixed the ferris wheel, should be fine now.

As for the trees, im not sure why you've turned them into func_objects but thats the reason they are falling (though i didnt see that in my compile, they just weren't there!). leave them as normal brushes and you should be alright.

good luck with the rest of the map!
