It's a server setting. Any server admin that wants to can easily change it back, or to whatever they want for that matter.

Exactly - this is a server side setting.  Complain to your local server admin to correct it.

im pretty sure PiCaSSo and Snipen said despite their best efforts, the ball speed was hardcoded

i also remember eR33t members getting raged and that wouldnt make sense since they run their own match servers.

if im wrong though, change it to back to the original in the b21 default

The ball speed is NOT hardcoded. It's a server setting, it always has been. You misheard, or they were messing with you.
Title: Re: Tweak: Return Ball Speed To Previous Setting
Post by: FlaMe on February 08, 2008, 10:28:18 PM
can someone get me the number for the ballspeed value and/or the server command so i can give em to Snipen

The reason why GT's were the last to be updated was because snipen didnt want the new ballspeed but i dont think he comes on here very often. I can probably catch him or Doug on vent though.

It's not hardcoded, but it won't change if you put it in a config file. You need to change it *after* the server has started.

if GT puts it in the server config file in their FTP and resets the servers itll work...?

and do you know the command / value for the b19 speed

Post by: sk89q on February 08, 2008, 10:46:04 PM
Nope. They'll have to start the server up and then change it from the console, in-game via cvar_set, or via RCON.

Var/value: http://digitalpaint.therisenrealm.com/reference/commands#ball_speed

That's silly. Can this feature request be changed to "Tweak: Allow ball speed to be defined in the server config"?

EDIT: The ball speed actually resets every map change. Apparently it is 'hardcoded', in at least one sense. This really should be fixed ASAP.

Dont mean to double post so don't kill me... but...

I do like it being hardcoded only due to the fact servers shouldn't have different ballspeeds nor allowed to make different ballspeeds because that will throw off gameplay for most players

I say just restore that default number back to the b19 value in b21? =\

Here's something else to discuss:

WHen clans match, will ball speed be discussed when deciding what maps to match on?

That'd be ridiculous, I think all of the older, established clans which keep the IRC community alive would agree they want the ballspeed changed back to its build19 and lower state

If it changed, then preferably as a game setting and not as a server setting. And it better be changed fast or leave it be.

Eric

Thaaaat's not my name. >_>

EDIT: Okay, maybe it's actually best that the ball speed is hardcoded. Hardcoded means standardized. I think next time the ball speed is changed, jits needs to inform people as it was kind of slipped under the radar this time around. But as long as it's properly announced, I don't see why a ball speed change can't happen.
Title: Re: Tweak: Return Ball Speed To Previous Setting
Post by: FlaMe on February 09, 2008, 03:25:44 PM
Definitely is your name

And it throws off people's aims. Pgp'ing is harder, lines dont work the same on some maps, aim is drastically thrown off on some of the easiest maps and habits dont work.

idk it was kinda random imo
Title: Re: Tweak: Return Ball Speed To Previous Setting
Post by: Eiii on February 09, 2008, 03:31:06 PM
Of course it throws off people's games- it's a major change. But major changes happen, usually (sometimes?) for the better. This game is in development- just because something's one way now doesn't mean it'll stay that way.

And it definitely is not.

I only play nowadays to let off steam (not to win), so you'll usually find me as 'newbie.' I can line, rush, and suck all I want without giving a excrement. :D

(Not to mention the ping problem I have.)

Here's what I wrote to picasso when he asked why:

There were several reasons.  Not sure if you remember the old ball flight and how slow the balls were - you had to aim at the sky half the time.  That was due to a limit on the max velocity.  We figured out how to get by that and I researched the velocity of real paintballs, which several sites listed as 300fps, so we set that as the ball speed.  At the time, of course people complained (I think mostly because the vets didn't have a huge advantage over new players anymore).  I think some referred to it as a railgun.  But I just figured that's the way it was supposed to be, not that familiar with real paintball.  I've been playing real paintball a lot recently, and noticed that the range of real paintballs vs the ones in the game are significantly different.  Balls will bounce off of people halfway across a small speedball field as opposed to the game where you can pick people off across the map that are up on a 20-story high ledge.  I was also annoyed at times where players could shoot all the way across a medium to large sized map and pin people in the base.  Kind of ruins the gameplay and takes away from the spirit of the game.  Paintball is more about close-range combat.  There are plenty of other games you can play if you want to shoot people across the map.

Anyway, I started looking at the code some more, and not only was the base speed high (300 fps vs 280 fps), but with the barrel upgrades, the velocity went over 400 fps.  I figured it was time to tone things down a bit, but I didn't want to have a drastic change, so I just dropped the base velocity down to 285fps for now.  I'm not sure if I'll go any further since I've been catching some flak for changing things.  I think ultimately it's better for the game overall, though.

Not sure.. But last time i checked this was digital paintball, you cant jump 200 ft through the air in real paintball.  Why change a setting everyone liked.  There were no complaints about it.  In fact you are getting alot of complaints because you changed it.  Maybe we should start a petition or something to get this changed back.

Edit:  At least add this to the feature vote so that it can be voted on, maybe you are wrong about it being better for the game jitspoe.  Please let the community decide.

Just leave the ballspeed as it is. It helps newbies to integrate. I think it should change regularly to stop people getting 'too' good in pubs and to sttract new players (if they think that they are doing well)

There were no complaints about it.

Err, I would've complained if the ball speed was so slow that you had to aim really high to get someone. At least in real paintball you could aim up and look down slightly at what you're shooting at. It sounds like at the old speed you couldn't see infront of you because you were too busy trying to shoot somone by aiming up.
Title: Re: Tweak: Return Ball Speed To Previous Setting
Post by: SuperMAn on February 26, 2008, 05:14:29 PM
??? What are you talking about, the old speed was faster.  I don't think the speed should be changed to help the newbies integrate.  More newbies started to play back when the ball speed was normal, this just messes everyone up,  why make everyone that knew how to aim learn how to again??  Good way to thank the people that have been playing this game for years.

Yeh, its like starting from scratch again.  You need good people to compete against.  If they start again it gets all boring.  Thats why there are global login servers and beginner servers......

Is that only when you use the "map" command to change maps?  Or does it do it when you login and use "newmap," as well?  What about when frag/cap/time limit is reached and the server automatically goes to next map in rotation -- does it revert then?  Just asking out of curiousity.
Title: Re: Tweak: Return Ball Speed To Previous Setting
Post by: XtremeBain on February 27, 2008, 01:18:30 PM
There's no point fixing it.  jitspoe hardcoded the changes to the barrel speed, so it still won't be the same that it was before.  Might as well just leave it now and get used to the aiming all over again.  Too bad everyone called us a bunch of whiners for getting upset at jitspoe when the change had just been made... I'm pretty sure we've been playing with the previous setting for longer than eR33t has been around (6yrs).

Why don't we change the default gravity to 1000.  To prevent people from jumping too high for the new players to hit.  While we're at it let's take out all the hoppers, because it's too easy to kill a lot of people when you have more than 40 paint.  We should also take out the steel barrel.  This would ensure no one can ever get decent aim.  And since we are trying to make this like real paintball all of a sudden, take out strafe jumping also, because the new players can't hit you when you go fast.  We could also remove always run,  actually remove running all together and turn tripping on on all servers just to make sure we don't go too fast.

......PLEASE let the community vote on the ballspeed change jitspoe.

love the new ballspeed :) more realistsic, everyone complains about how the textures are poor and they want hi res one's, meaning they want the game to look more like real life, so why not have the game play like real life? i like the new feature because it makes it way harder to camp. and why change it now alot of people are used to it, if you change it back it would mess everyone up.

Back on topic.

I think the ballspeed is perfect now. You actually got know how to play now. Before just drop a line and bam you gone come out with the win. I seen so many people match us and say they wish the ballspeed was low so i couldn't camp. Now when it happens its a big problem.

its harder to camp because say in blitz if your ducking under a window somones line can now drop right on you, or in propaint1 if somones rushing out cat you actually have to aim more infront of him.

hmm, let me check.....yep, the feauture vote is still working. Phew, I was worried for a sec there. There is more to the forums/feature vote than just getting what you (or part of the community) want. Ultimately, it's what Jits wants (and/or the comitte). They listen to us and take into consideration what we say. If everything were pure democracy, the game would probably suck. jits had to get rid of some crap ideas that the comunity suggested, right jits?

It wouldn't just be Jitspoe's decision to get rid of the bad ideas.  If someone requested the feature and there was nothing but negative feedback, it might be removed but I have yet to see a topic in the feature vote board get removed and not put up for vote.  If something is put on the the feature vote board, Jitspoe will give feedback about the request but will still put the request up for vote.  Also, the committee has absolutely no say it what is implemented in the game.  The committee is for ban time voting and have to vote for a feature like everyone else.  Please check your facts before you say something of this nature.

Pls change it back or let me vote on it. I'm 20, playing pb at times when I was sth. like 16 I think. I don't want to have those frustrating times again, like they were when I begun... It's no fun anymore!

All just to make a bunch of newbs have a not-so-much frustrating start in this game, before they will quit when the 6th farcry-clone has been released (because gfx/play/bullet-flight-behavior/.. is "soooo realistic"..... ) ?

If it's really coz of realism: The majority of the players never played rl pb be4 and didnt even mention anything of that gained realism, just having a terrible aim...

A countermeasure for lining? Set it back! To me it's better getting lined the 6th time by the same player then having an aim like a player that just joined dp2.

So that is what happened?

I couldn't figure out why everything seemed different about aiming.  I don't care for the new speed. Especially on PGP it is rough .

I was never that great at aiming anyway, but at least I was used to it.  I don't feel like investing the time to re-learn a game I already learned.

All of you need to get over it :D

Buts jits should be careful not to try and make this game "realistic". I enjoy playing this game mainly for the fact that it isn't a sim, so using "its more realistic" as a reason for this change really doesn't make much sense.

Anyhow something that effects the elite matching community like this will always cause uproar as it is something that does change the way you must play, but yeah get over it already...

"At the time, of course people complained (I think mostly because the vets didn't have a huge advantage over new players anymore)."
-- jitspoe

Veterans have always maintained a huge advantage over new players. There are really a lot more important factors in this game than how well you can aim and quickly hit a target (movement, ability to predict opponent movement, knowledge of maps and angles, using sounds effectively, the list goes on..) and that has always been consistent. You can bring the best rail-gun gamer in the world into DP and dump them into a random map, and I will obliterate them. Sure, they'll fair better than someone who only plays online chess, but quick reflexes and aim are just a few of the requirements to be very good..

I think the problem is much less with what WAS changed, and much more with HOW it was changed (without any attempt at proper discussion, rebuttal, or explanation). I love the efforts that have been recently made for a more organized 'committee' , as well as things like the feature voting. Let's make sure we always use these tools in the future to encourage intelligent debate and discussion; even if we feel we _know_ what is best for the community.
