Title: The second GlobalGamers Mapping Contest!
Post by: ViciouZ on October 11, 2008, 02:00:08 PM
As celebration of the second anniversary of the launch of the GlobalGamers IRC Network, GG will be hosting a mapping contest for Digital Paintball 2.

Rules of competition:

1. Maps must be submitted no later than 6pm on the 11th of November, GMT.
2. Any maps submitted must have been started after this announcement was made.
3. Map remakes are allowed, as long as all brushwork is original. This can and will be checked with .map source or a decompiler.
4. You may enter as many different maps as you like.
5. You may map in teams.
6. Custom textures, models and sound effects are permitted as long as they are under the GPL license.
7. Your map must be somehow related to the theme.
E.g. if the theme was Military, you could have make hangars, a munitions factory, barracks, a nuke silo or any other military installation.

The theme for this competition is "Space".

There will be 3 judges for the contest. They will vote on Aesthetics, Gameplay and Technique.
If you are interested in judging, please post a reply to this thread. Judges are excluded from entering maps. Hopefully we can reduce the delay between submission and results that there was last time.

Now, get mapping!

Edit: Prizes TBA, probably similar to last time :-)

If school+work permits it, I'll give it a try. Or, at least come up with a clever way to get DirtyTaco to do it for me.

Is any game mode fine? I'd be more apt to try a Siege map than CTF (just because I don't enjoy copy/pasting a base and mirroring it, although there's always the TF2 approach of changing aesthetics up a bit to make it not seem so symmetric). Of course, if the judges are more likely to favor the gameplay of CTF maps, this is a bad idea.

Are map remakes supposed to be maps we've made in the past, or can they be remakes of maps from other games?

I would actually go and join this competition, but I need to figure out what is wrong with my 3D view in BSP.

IronFist: Any gamemode is fine. Making maps from other games is allowed, as long as you don't decompile or otherwise convert the brushwork.

Webhead: Sod off!

musickid999: Spook had a problem with his 3d view, i'm not sure if it is the same as yours but have a look around for the thread.

I could be one of the three judges if you don't find anyone better than me. I haven't released a map yet because I'm always too lazy to finish them but still I know how to map and I know when a map looks good and has a good gameplay. Also, I have (too) much time to be online.
I hope you choose me :P

I'll apply as a judge as well.  I like playtesting maps thoroughly and I'm pretty good at remembering details as well. Although I haven't touched BSP in the last 2-3 years, I still know stuff about mapping and I'm pretty sure I could give objective input on the maps' quality.

Cool, I thought it would take more time to decide the three judges. Well, I'm happy with that :P

Me too.

Quick question though, when you say 'Your map must be somehow related to the theme', could someone get away with, say, a remake of The Brothahood Cosmic Club by SinisterMinister (cosmic3.bsp)

A few questions:

1. Can I submit a "polished beta" ?  I feel rushed and I do not want to finish a map for the sake of the contest.  I would like to finish 95% of the map, but still leave it in beta so that it can be improved over more time after this contest.

2. I am doing a map remake of a map not originally part of the DP world.  Is this allowed?

I think polished beta would be the way to go - use the feedback from the judges to make tweaks if necessary.

Well they are going to be released - so posted on the forums. Make sure to give them the appropriate new map thread and beta tag.

"Space" was kind of a bad choice, especially with the given textures this game has. Not all of us have time to make new textures for a free game.
Title: Re: The second GlobalGamers Mapping Contest!
Post by: musickid999 on November 10, 2008, 05:38:20 PM
True, not to mention, there's actually not that many good maps you can make with the theme "space". I'm not saying its impossible, it's jut hard for most of us who only map in our free time.
Title: Re: The second GlobalGamers Mapping Contest!
Post by: Garrett on November 10, 2008, 05:43:38 PM
Just make it no theme and make the mappers state the theme they used in their creation.

I didn't participate because it's in the middle of the school year, and some of the ideas I had would take a while to implement. A month just flies past with ease.

If you hold this in the summer, it'd probably fare better. Also, having prizes announced at the same time might inspire people more.

I say we should re hold this competition. There was definitely not enough participants. Maybe hold it during the summer.

As 1 of the 2 competitors, I think we should be given a bit better theme that appeals to most mappers, and a time where everyone can actually do it.

Don't give out prizes this time around, maybe hold them to next time.

Right, this ended 3 hours ago :P

If the judges could please download the 3 entry maps, judge them with a rating out of 10 on each of the criterea laid out in the first post, a short explanation for each rating, and then PM me the answers by Friday please.

Hopefully this won't take the full 3 weeks the last contest did.

Thankyou for all the entries :D

This topic is a good indicator.  Would it really matter anyway, knowing that who is participating?  If you want to summit a map, it wouldn't really matter who is participating.

I agree with Eiii.
One month is not enough to make a good map, one can hardly make a decent map in that time.

I just uploaded all 3 entries to 3iob Pub.  I put each map on with a few people in the pub, and everyone agrees that cusomans map is the best one, followed by ricks, then jitspoes.  Although all 3 of them do have problems.

Sorry Jitspoe, but your map isn't even playable.  The ball falls every 2 seconds, the long tunnels that are supposed to shoot you over to the base don't work ( the ball just stops at the end and falls ), people constantly got stuck in the tunnels.  Looks decent but no one will ever look at it for more than 2 minutes unless alot of that is fixed.

Ricks map only had 1 fault that we found while playing, sometimes when a door closes on you, you fall through the map.  It is very easy to get lost in though, a few too many doors?

And finally Cusos map only had a few very minor issues, like some places the roof is a little too low, but thats about it.  EVERYONE in the pub seemed to love Cusos map, including me.

Cuso    #1
Rick     #2
Jitspoe #3

In about 95% of the people that were in the pubs opinion.

b) there's more to the judging than just gameplay

I am not a judge, but I think it´s not fair. I played jitspoe´s map and I didn´t find there anything funny, it was just about yourself killing and ball was falling down a lot. Cuso´s 2port looks much better, and the gamaplay is sweet. Rick´s map looks good, but gamaplay is worse and it´s hard to find a way to other side. But ok, judges made a verdict and anybody can´t do it anything with it. I hope that next GG Mapping contest will be soon ;)
