Title: Desires for Build 17?

Yeah, build 16 isn't quite done yet, but I thought I'd get some feedback on what people want most for the next version.

Some things I was thinking about:
- More ignore options, such as the ability to ignore a list of phrases, anything containing certain words (might be nice to ignore "hack" and "cheat" for example, to have a peaceful playing experience), or anything with color.  There's already a generic ignore command, for those who don't know.
- Options to strip color/formatting codes from names and/or chat text.
- Better cheat detection.
- Global logins / name protection.
- Motion blur or something to make paintballs more visible.
- Better Linux support.
- Surface-dependent footstep sounds.
- Better 3D sound support.
- More GUI stuff, like a right-click menu on the scoreboard so you can easily ignore, kick, etc. players.
- New level format (this one will take a while, but it needs to be done at some point).
- Optimizations (the new player models are a lot more detailed and will probably knock your framerate down a bit).

Anyway, those are just some things off the top of my head.  Let me know what you want most (doesn't have to be on that list).

Why can't the paintballs be a sprite instead of an acutal 3d model? And how about making it so that it simulates a player model being exactly where you are for the water reflections?

EDIT: The sprite thing was more of a question than a request. Just clearing that up.

eiii: They can be.  Back in the day we used sprites.  We switched to models because sprites were too blocky (balls were only 4 pixels tall and were huge).

Aah. So, it was ugly. That makes sense. Yeah, motion blurring would be nice. If it was toggleable/scaleable.

The sound jits, the sound !!!  Sometimes at playing i think opponent is coming left side when he comes right. And also a problem (??) with the sound is: When i spawn in my base i sometimes hear the opponent in his base. (Pbcup.bsp as an example). Well this left-right-confusing thing should really be fixed. thanks  ;)

Another question: How will the "Global Login" actually work?
Will there be any restrictions in the different names binded (like -ch1ll-bitmate and -ch1ll-whatever, ect.)?

I just got a great idea, well in my oppinion it is.

If jitspoe is going to add this "right click on scoreboard" thing, you could let the "name" command activated, so you can still change your names (clantags), and if you right click on somebody there's something called "Login name" where you can look up whos playing.

Basic plan for the logins would be this:
- 1 primary login name.  This would be your plain name with no clan tag.
- 2 secondary names.  You would use these for your clan tagged name.  These would be able to be changed, but there will be a time limit on changes (say 3 weeks or so), so people can't change their name every day, but will be able to change them eventually in the event that they change clans.
- Names will be stored as case-insensitive alphanumeric characters only.  Color codes and other characters will be stripped off so people can't get clever and fake people's names very easily.

That's what I have in my head, anyway.

I vote "More GUI Stuff", i mean we already got the new hud a few builds back... and what you did with that was amazing.

it would be nice to have some graphical 2-d versions of an autococker and a carbine or some way to know what gun you have, for any fov100'ers/hand2'ers.  I mean, looking at a picture is a TON easier than looking at a faded "autococker".. and another thing is the default font, am I the only one who thinks it looks absolutely terrible? I think even a simple verdana or arial would look better and make the game aloooot more visually appealing, along with THAT and the global login thing, dp would be 10x better.

I'm not going to get ALL that stuff I listed in build 17.  Those were just some things I want to add and I'm trying to get some feedback as to what to focus on.  Let me know what you want most.  If you could only have 1 new feature, what would it be?

Imporant first:

-Improved HUD (seperate chat and other stuff so chat stays longer)
-Better sound, foot steps, the grunting jump noise, as mentioned, the pbcup bug
-New level system++ this will make the game look new and attract many new players.
-Improved player models
-view wep on player models...
-Dont know if this is possible, but when someone drops a gun or anything else, make it more instant. ditch the tossing the gun in the air effect, which appears 2 seconds late anyways.


less important:

-visable paintballs
-easier to ID teammates. even, No ID on enemies, and make teammate ID pop up quick.
-If you EVER improve the GUI, look at TRIBES2. It has one of the most impressive interfaces and is simple to use. Chat, email, Ignore, bio, rankings, etc...
-which also means user logins to play. I'm for this, but I suggest each login has 3 or 4 names they can play under, and searching in the super new GUI for that name will show all that players names.
-locked FOV (I know people would hate this.. but I find FOV changes sorta cheaty)
-make the guns stop shooting above the x-hair. it should never go above the x-hair...

At least i can see the models as the are now. Thats all need is a target. Now if I could see how my shots are flying towards a target I would be at least 40% better. Sorry to point that out its my opinion, sorry.

Improved HUD needs minor things. I wish chat and kill messages could be seperated some how. I hit console way more then should ever be needed. The game time update isnt needed either since there is a game clock in lower right. just have it glow or something when there are 10 seconds left. neon green or some color that isnt used by a team. I like how newer games have x-hair customization in the game. changing styles, colors, and sizes. When using hand 2, there needs to be a gun icon or something. it could easily fit between the helmet and the player bars. The co2 bar could use a face life with instead of disapearing bars, have it a gradual bar (like the gun jam bar below it).

most important is the hand 2 gun icon, and the chat being jumbled into the other important info.

loial- we are saying what we feel is important. no need to say sorry. I never had much trouble seeing the pballs, and i usually go by splats on the ground. So my priorities are different. Improved models would just make it feel more natural to me, which is why thats on my list.

Tough decision between the three. Better sound/HUD would make people happier for a short time, but the global login is better as it would decrease problems, not just increase fun. +2 for the global login.

I'd say that the global login is the most important thing at the moment, cause hacking gets more and more annoying, With a global login, you can't hide behind other nicks ;) .
Secondly, as mentioned by Shreds, I'd like to see the actuall weapons my enemies / teammates are using. All I see is a Carbine... (I think that belongs under your point "Optimizations").

Pause is allready implemented. Just type "pause" in the console. To unpause, close the console (well, I think you unpause by closing the console)...

I tested the "pause" a few minutes before. Its good for the first.

I have another wish, too.
I miss a "ü", "ä" and "ö" support for the chat / teamchat. At the time i must write ue, ae and oe, but thats not so good.

I got one more thing:

Maybe something like a "bounce"thing
If u done a very high/long  jump u bounce up, so u can go over crates/barrels


Here just one example (i know you can to that jump without the bounce thingy too, but with it is more easier ;)

I think my list would look like this:
1) Global Login
2) Improved HUD
3) Sounds - however you can make your own sounds so it shouldnt be that big of a deal. But the footstep sounds should be improved tho.
UPDATE
I seem to recall a while back that you were considering a "match mode", I was curious if you were still going to try and implement this? I think it would be really nice. I did not see Shreds earlier post about this.

Take the path of q3pb, q_ball, etc?

If there are q3 features you want, I can probably port them over, but I don't see much sense in dropping 8 years of work just so it can be based on the quake3 engine.  Plus, several people would complain about the physics changes.

It would be nice if there would be more options for that "eleminated", like shot down, silenced or something like that, and If possible headshots should show up specially, Like a colored cprint and colored text in the upper left corner, this would be really cool :-)

It is still there.. (middle of page 2)

The fact that nobody responded to that post is probably just that nobody cares about the kill messages.

budated gun models..at least for the autococker, hig res textures, added motion in the players movment (they still look sortta merry when they jump), and do something about the players looking so small...i know that the currecnt models are the exact size ofteh hitbox bit they look A LOT smaller than before, especillay when crouching

yay demo controls -- can we get it so you can adjust the fov while viewing too?  and topspeed/speedometer would be kinda nice too, but just as fluff... i really just care about the fov.  by the way, i love that you can check the scoreboard while playing a demo.. that's so much better than q2 demos were

updated hud -- or as shreds was saying, separating the kill/chat messages -- if you do decide to do this, can you leave the old hud in as an option, like old_hud 1 or something cause i like how it is now, not that i'm trying to stop anyone from having it updated how they like it

i know the old 'id' command was pretty cheesy, as in easy to find people, but could you do something about the delay on the current id? the fact that you have to have your crosshair actually on the person is fine, but could you like make it closer to instantaneously showing up and/or make the x, y of the text configurable?  id_x 150; id_y 150 or whatever, to make it 150x150 pixels off the center -- again, just a neat feature i'd like, but i really would like the delay toned down a little bit, it's almost impossible to keep your crosshair on someone after you die and they're moving around to figure out which of the two people you're looking at shot you cause you can't determine who is who. wow, that whole paragraph made no sense even with editing.

i can't take screenshots of the console (anymore?).  i'd like to be able to do that

as for oddjob's post:  i didn't know you could make your own sounds, but if you can i don't really think you should be able to edit the footstep sounds from more of a fairness standpoint (and i like i said, i don't know if you can).  they're pretty faint right now so a tone up might be nice, but i kinda like them how they are now... perhaps an old_footsteps 1 command to use the old sounds? :)

match mode like in aq2 would be nice... more so just for the no message mode 1 except for captains -- although i forsee problems if a team is trying to tell the other team that someone's idle (such as the captain) so while this would be a nice feature, it'd probably be nicer if people weren't lamers and talked crap in mm1 so you wouldn't need match mode -- i like the 'ready' command though

well, I'd like to have a command to stop the countdown timer when all people go obs / one team goes obs. It can get really annoying when the map changes when you dont want it to. Maybe/probably it should be for admins only so no g*y newbies on a public server can prevent the map from changing when everybody actually wanted it to :)

Can you speed up the dl of files from server when client doesnt have a map. For example adding a variable in server.cfg like "seta maxuploadbyclient 30" en ko

vwep is short for visible weapons.

so that you can see what weapon your opponant has.

Makes for more realism.

yeah, i give big big thumbs up to demo controls, i thought timedemo was supposed to do something helpful but it's never done anything for me except lock up the demo playback.

How about making some of the text resonses server side variables? That way the server admins can customize the messages?

Also, how about a transparant bot that can relay game/match stats to an ip, like a match bot in irc?

yeah, 2 things that would be cool is

1) Water rippling when some-one walks in it, water already looks pretty "heh" but that would be a nice touch.

2)and seeing your own reflection in the water would be cool too...

Well, to make it paintball,

1. Decreased acurracy. When you shoot, you lose accuracy in real life
2. Running animations
3. People don't just vanish. Maybe "fade" away.

Higly agree... Decreased accuracy dependant on current speed would be a plus for the game.

Oh, I dual vote for a new map format. I just guess people don't realize the current restrictions... but... it should be up there...

That would be a bad move surely. Plus, if you're going at a higher speed then theoretically your aim should be worse anyway

This is more-or-less already in the game.  Player speed is added to each paintball upon being fired.  However your accuracy will remain the same if you're able to counter-aim your speed ;)

You should beable to have a skin choice like q2 they had many different looks also a cool feature could be the changed of the paintballs color because on some parts of maps when its dark its difficult to see the paintballs and on big maps you cant see the dark colors a cool thing would be to make the paintballs white and your own black

In B16, when I watching a flag carrier crouch, the flag goes through them, so if that could be fixed it would look a little better.
Another thing is the lighting, in B16 I can't see...it makes me depressed to be in dark corners and to be stuck in water with no light.

Also that changeable skin thing should be removed. Maybe some guys could send you some suggestions as skins, jits and you choose one or two of them (which ones arent giving any unfair advantages) and add them to the current choice. Then we can choose between them or if no suggestions fit then keep one skin (which you can improve or let as it is). BUT skins should really be locked. If this is much work to do then i remove my vote for more visible paintballs and put it for this. I think locked skins would be a great step to more sportsmanship because now nearly everyone can change them, takes an advantage of it and doesnt even have to be afraid of getting caught. :-/

Skin checks will probably be added regardless of what people vote for.  I think what Clipz was talking about is being able to change your own skin (what other people see), not the skins of other players.  Being able to use different skins and models (on yourself) is already planend.

I vote for the login system too. Can you make the widescreen resolution work in fullscreen? When I click fullscreen nothing happens, so I just hide my taskbar and have that window take up the whole screen.

have the dead guy raise his arms and walk to the edge of the map then disappear.

I have no idea how dificult that would be, but it does make it a bit more realistic, plus you can still shoot him. :D

Close, let me elaborate. I would perfer an over all score. Based on k/d ratio + time in game + grabs + caps + meeting objectives (KOTH) + more points for killing with persision - friendly kills. That way you could have a ranking system, Again like americas army high honor does not equate to being a better player or getting better equipment. Its just an honor setting to let people know you have played alot. Thus giviing people incentive to keep there global login accounts. :)

How about no headshots. As in, if you hit someones heap they aren't out, but they have their vision obscured by a huge blotch of paint on the helmet, even if your own team hits you. that could be good.

1. Able to use Build 17 without OpenGL Drivers because my computer sucks and I dont have enough money for a new one yet.
2. Able to access every server with build 17 like in build 16 but I need a build that doesnt need OpenGL.
3. Make Build 17 openable so i can select the software version and make it so I dont need OpenGL.

Include the option for more realistic graphics: Bodies don't dissapear until the player respawns and the guns on the ground are the proper sized models, don't float in mid-air and don't spin. Of course, make these things optional, and it will still be possible to walk through them.

Since so many people have no idea what is going on. Jitspoe, I thnk you should add an auto-mirc download with Build 17, or something like that. ;)

So many people don't know what it is and we have told like 10 people in the past 10 days or so on this board what it is, where to download it etc. Maybe just put it in the Full Build 17, not just the add-on patch.

Just a suggestion.

You could grab an opensource, or even make an irc client and built it into dpball if this is a popular demand. Having some people in irc becomes a paint though...make it connect to a #Help channel by default or something...leave them there for a while...

When I was all into Q3 most of the clan's had their own irc servers that posted all things said in-game and there were a couple mods to allow you to actually be talking on an irc server in the game, useless if everyone doesn't have it, but it was kinda neat. Also almost evey clan site had stats and archives of all game logs, which came in handy when someone tried talking out of their d0nkey.

I desire the ability to give a reason for kicking a person. Its always a pain to get kicked from a server and not know why. I also desire that the swear filter have a configuration file so you can add words to it and filter some of the stuff that people say when they get pgp'd.

It's a Q2 bug.  I haven't figure out what causes it yet.  If you crouch and move quickly, it doesn't happen.  It only happens when you're moving slowly.  It took a while for me to figure out how to even reproduce it.  I find it's hard to move slow enough to get stuck.

I'll be doing this for future builds, too, so try to keep in mind one thing that bugs you most about the game that you want changed, or one thing that you really want to see added.  To prevent a flood of requests for small things, I'm only accepting 1 request per person, so think carefully about what it is you want.  There's no point in replying to this thread anymore, though.  Wait for the next build to be released, and I will start a new thread.

I can't figure out what use a login system could be used for, lmao. Other than people stealing others names or something, which is pretty laughable. Or is it to just an easier way to get IP Address and figure out who's cheating when comparing them to the global ban list? Or statistics, pretty sure one server would run it.

Name protection is the primary purpose.  Hopefully it'll be helpful in organizing clans and whatnot, too.  It's not my first choice for a new feature, but it's what the most people voted for, so that's what I'm working on.

Here's some more of my crazy desires...er, at least the ones that relate to dpball:
The Counterstrike/Quake4 thing where in the upper right corner the kills are listed with images between names to show what killed them.
Also I know that this already works as observer, but have the name of the player that you are aiming at show up over their head, this comes in handy with team planning because you'd be able to know the names of the players that are near you so you can communicate with them and plan a rush, or to defend the flag.

I still think a match mode would help standardize the matching process in the community.  PBCup match format already touches on some of this, but we have to do a lot of it manually.  Basically you have 1 person from each team enter in a command to make them the captain.  Only they can talk in mm1 during the match, everyone else is forced to talk in mm2.  Both teams can join up on their sides as soon as they join the server, but the countdown wont start until everyone types /ready in the console.  If for any reason the game becomes 3v4 or 2v3 because a player got disconnected, overflowed, etc, the following round is delayed until teams are made even or everyone types /ready again in the console.  I've heard of matches where people just get frustrated and leave the server, so although thats a very immature way to handle a loss, both teams should not be punished and become stuck in the game until its even teams again.  Clans can be given timeouts (by typing /to or /time in the console) which last for 20-30 seconds...This allows clans to make substitutions if need be, or quickly rework a strategy.

I know I suggested it before, but I really think this would be the best thing for matches in DP.

The /ready command sounds quite reasonable, because there can be 1-2 minutes of warm-up before each map in this case. (Maybe there must be a time limit until the match actually starts, in the unlikely case a whole clan / single player doesn't type /ready.)
The idea with timeouts sounds good as well, maybe giving a team like 2 timeouts 30sec each during one map.

All of your suggestions are representing match modes in EnemyTerritory, which are really great. So in my opinion, adding these rules / commands to pball would help to improve the match style.

I wish u could do /ignore mm1 in game.

/ignore mm1 would work in matches, but in pub u would first have to do /players, then see the persons # and then /ignore 1

I hope this will some day come. So we can match with tr again (their mm1 is pathetic and disturbing)

I think this was played with in PB2 or was seen in QWPB at one point.  I don't think it went over very well though.

Some Natural Selection servers have a plugin that does the same thing... It just forces the spawn campers to stand just outside the base and wait a few seconds before entering again.

I don't see anything terrible wrong with spawncamping... If the spawns on the map are placed well, then the spawncamper shouldn't be able to see all the spawns at once. It's like kicking a puppy to death to make sure you aren't killed by dogs in the future.

+1 for faster downloads.

I'd like to see maybe some sort of mirror system for downloading new maps. When downloading in game it tends to be very slow. Switching to a web browser and downloading the mission map tends to save a lot of time.
It would be nice if the client could automaticly check a server if the missing map is there and download it that way instead of pulling from the game server. Bonus points if the server can tell the client where to look first like in the case of a custom map or one in testing that wouldn't be on some main site.

I know this might not be a big thing but in matches it might be a 3v3 and we have 8 people on in the match.  Typing specinvite 1, specinvite 2, etc etc is hard.  some way to type specinvite 1 2 7 8 0 to spec all.  Same with ignore cuz sometimes i want to play in peace or ignore the other team.  ignore 0 3 5 6 to igonore all those players numbers.  Also is the game going to have screenshots at random times? i suspect lots of people of using modified balls,textures, people and such.

Yeah, that's been said before, they were thinking of an ignore all command. Also, if you could ignore certain teams it would be helpful as well, such as in matches where the other clan is wanting to be uber spamming asshats when you're trying to give your clan recon.

Depending on how the login system is set up, people may not be able to change their name in-game.

There's actually already a setting to display name changes, but I disabled it by default, because whenever newbies are editing their names, it floods the console with name changes.

just out of curiosity, how will the improved cheat detection be able to detect modified textures, like how is the server going to check if the blue male skin is a certain shade of blue or not...if there isnt already an asnwer i would go about setting a default file size because the size of a skin/gun/pball shouldnt differ from the originals made by jits

It's not going to check the shade, or individual colors, it'll test if the client's version matches the server's. I believe.
