There was something very similar in the past (I think it was by mazing) but it never got finished. I'm not surre why this occured but, I'll try my best to stop it.
What is a Community Mapping Project?
It's where the community of mappers come together and work on a single map in turns. (Designing, mapping etc).
Why??
Well, I think it would be fun and the newer mappers can learn a bit more technique from those more experienced. Plus, it might actually get out of the beta phase! :P
How does it work!?
Well, I'll use this thread as a discussion point to see whether or not people actually want to participate. If all goes well, the people participating or the whole community can decide on a theme. After that, those that want to participate will collaborate and draw up a design. With everyone participating critiquing and adding their ideas we can surely come up with a very nice map design that will cater for noobs and pros. Then, we will take turns (maybe 3 days each) of actually constructing the map. OR, we could all design a base each and whichever we vote is the best, we continue from.
Mappers so far:
-RobinAndL!nk
-Viciouz
-Rockyar_96
-Rick
Mode of Map:
KOTH
Theme:
?
Is there anyone who would be interested in this?
-
I'd be interested for sure. But I got exams for 2 months until they are finished ill be out of action.
-
Depending on how much interest there is, I may put it off for a few months :P
-
yes
-
I think what Vicouz meant is "Best idea ever, I can't wait to help out with it!"
-
yeah, love this idea. I'm just trying to compensate for the lack of loial on the forums these days :p
-
I'm in.
-
I would :) great idea.
-
I think we should do an indoor type of map. You hardly see any of these.
EDIT -- 500th post!!!!
-
So that makes 4, 5 in a couple of months when omni has more time. What happens now, Rick?
-

I like the base idea, we should start on that.

So, what kind of map would you guys want to make? DM? CTF? Etc.
-
Ultimate KOTH.
-
Horde Mode... oh wait, not yet :/
BUT MAYYBEEEEE if the map was made jitspoe might start on the AI O:]

I would much perfer a Zombie game-mode where when shot you turn into a different team with pgp... Zombies = PGP humans = better gun.
-
Would quite like to try and make a KOTH map that works. If it looks good and meets the criteria for the official map list, it could be put in the game, and maybe people would actually play KOTH. If it sucks, we can probably convert it to some other game mode easily enough.
I mean, all the game modes have at least one map that is worth playing right now, apart from KOTH:
DM - pb2dm1, arm
CTF - like 50 good maps and 1000s of excrement ones
1flag CTF - iunno, arenaball?
ELIM - dodgeball
SIEGE - siegecastle, zsiege, grave
PONG - soccer, otb_soccer
leaving 4 team ctf (gaaaay) and KOTH without any good maps :/
-
To be honest, Koth sounds awesome.
-
Also, theme suggestions?
I vote aztec, if we can pull that off with the pball textures.
-
I vote Industrial, it would look sweet. Or even an empty car park etc..
-
+1 for aztec
-
Any other suggestions? :)
-
problem is - nobody really knows how we should map the HILL for good gameplay :) I think it shouldn*t be too easy to defend, but just a endless spray fest in the mid is not so constructive as well. I made a small koth map a month ago. Its quite straightforward and for 2 teams only. Btw how many teams should we support?
-
I had spoken with Uni, and jitspoe about this idea before. If you guys want any help im sure we could give a hand.

For koth i would say 2 teams. I have an awesome idea for an industrial koth map.

Yeah, it's very hard to choose a design of KOTH that will function properly in an instakill game. I think the best option would be to have 2 'Hills', then each team can defend and have to push. Then again, both teams could just defend... Argh. It's a hard game mode! Let's just set nokill to 0, and have to shoot people around, haha(joke).
Btw, what suggestions do you have for the theme?

Industrial can be very complex though. Either way, it will be good fun to map with people that are passionate about mapping.
Yeah, 2 teams is what I'd go for. (Red & Blue).
Wanna draw up a design? We aren't set on Industrial, just a bit intrigued!

It's not whether we need help or not, it's whether you guys want to participate! Oh, I might ask Cusoman if he wants to be part of this. Anything that guy touches becomes amazing. Definitely the number one mapper!
-
I think it should be like some gamemodes like in bf3 conquest where there are 3 hills so 1 team USUALLY has atleast 1 hill and they fight over the third one/flank the other teams hill.
-
Here's some stuff to consider if we go with KOTH (which I am all for):
- To keep the game moving, we need an odd number of flags. One flag is just going be a grenade spam fest, so preferably 3 or more.
- DP doesn't have a minimap or other indicator of who controls each area, other than the flag entity. It would be useful to have at least one flags visible from each other flag, or maybe there's some really convoluted excrement we could do with triggers to pop up team-colored blocks or something.
- Having the flags visible from each other limits the amount of detail we can put in to each area, due to r_speeds, i.e. no water. This also might make an industrial theme slightly more difficult, as it usually relies on a lot of relatively complex brushwork.

- Agree, 69 Flags it is! ;)
- Ah, very true... Maybe if we do a good job, Jits will implement it haha.
- Definitely going to need a good design..
-
When making this map also if it has 3 "hills" is to make the hill entity big and somewhat noticeable.
maybe each hill entity could be one room.
This way you don't have to travel that far to capture the next hill..
and so you dont have to be on the flag to get "hill points"
-
idk whether it is possible to creat more than one hill. But you can just creat the hill entity out of 3 several brushes. Every team should have a "base" hill and then in the middle there is another one.
-

If you choose the industrial theme this would help :)
-
There are probably 10 or so maps with KOTH support.
kots1 was fun at lan parties, but nobody seems to like it in the "real world". :(
Piped had pretty decent support for KOTH, as did stacked -- those are both sort of industrial maps. There are a handful of other maps that support it as well. It just never really took off. I've kind of considered switching it to more of a conquest/domination style game mode. Maybe it just needs better feedback so players aren't so confused when a KOTH map pops up.

Yeah, I'm not sure either! I'd imagine that you could just put multiple brushes like you're saying. Instead of being able to see all 3 at once, could we just make it so you could see the middle one, from the 'base' hills.

They look sweet! But [Click] (http://simonoc.com/files/materials/industrial/industrial_soc_readme.txt).
I'm not sure if this would count as commercial use or not! I might end up emailing him about it.

To be very honest, I'm not sure if I've even played it! Was kots1 the one with all the barrels in the middle of the map, and also the flag? I think I might remember it...
Oh! Stacked! I forgot about that map. Both were made by Krewzer, right? Haven't seen that guy in ages. Ah, so maybe we should go another direction with this idea. I think the main problem of KOTH is a lack of information to the player. I've been playing tf2 a lot lately and they have signs and little hud signals to tell you the points.
-
Rick... You keep coming up with brilliant ideas!!!
On Topic: could you guys finish up and release all the GOOD beta maps? Or like create a matching map pack and a pub map pack.
-
i seem to remember multiple hills are possible. and it doesnt count as commercial use, we just need to put his namein the map credits - or at least, those are the terms for his egyptian textures.

Oh awesome! They're so nice.
-
The way it currently works with multiple hills is that if more than one team controls one (or any) hill, the hill is neutral. If only one team controls the hill(s), that team gets points at a set rate.

so 2 hills would work.. since defending 1 hill each won't get you anywhere.

Will do that tonight. (I'll use graphing paper or something.)
-
If we do 2 hills, I think we'll have to make it so you can shoot from one to the other. Otherwise, if there's just 1 player on one (or both) teams, he won't be able to leave his hill without letting the other team get points.
-
Chef-Killer made dome with 2 hills koth mode.
We play stack on the [OTB] Speed server often and a lot players like it. But the server is almost empty since i mad minclientbuild 38. Don't know why the players don't want an update. There should maybe be a permanent big "update available"-message in the main menu instead of the popup message one time.

I just think its the fact that everyone who downloads this game is under the age of 14 and doesn't know how to update their client.

Should really be auto updates.
Anyway, how are we feeling about this guys?
Want to still do Koth?
-
I'd be interested, too.
+1 for Industrial
-
No let's stick with CTF. There's a reason it's by far the most popular game mode, and that reason is because it's the best mode.

Why is it the best? I've played Koth a max of 20 times in 7-8years, as there isn't many quality maps for it.
Also, does this mean you want to take part in this?
-
we have enough CTF maps :)
-
I'm game.
-
KotH industrial 3 hills gogogo
-
If the three-hill idea is used, is the intention to give all three hills equal weight or to give the central hill a higher importance?
Being able to change the spawn point of players according to which points their team have captured would also help to move gameplay along, I imagine it wouldn't be impossible to do using various triggers, func_doors and teleports.
-
If someone would like to start drawing up a plan it'd be really awesome! I don't have much time until next week, so it'd help out a lot!
-
I'm trying to think of what a good setting would be. Most industrial settings have obscene amounts of detail (beams, pipes, machinery, etc. everywhere) with little blocking visibility. I think we'd have to go for more of a classic brick building type setting, but setting that up in such a way that the hills would be easily accessible/in line of sight from each other is going to be difficult.
-
Perhaps an energy plant site would make a good setting, using structures such as reactor towers as VIS blockers while generally keeping an open environment.
-
Power plants are very open with lots of detail. The reactors are generally just out in the open, so they wouldn't block anything...
-
Not just the reactors themselves, but with a combination of other buildings. The immediate area around the reactors are not always as open as you might think, depends mostly on the plant and its location.
Assuming players wouldn't be able to get on top of the reactors/buildings and see everything, even something fairly simple as the following could suffice, although modifications to suit two teams would obviously be needed.
Using the above screenshot, maybe something like this. (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/32004747/Leisure/powerplantplan.png) Making the starred buildings the tallest (apart from the reactors) would arguably provide a fair amount of blockage.
Obviously, this is just an example, so don't take this specific layout so seriously. ;D
-
I actually live next to one, maybe i can get some pictures*. (I Highly Doubt it though..)
-
There is that one map that i liked very much with the moving conveyor belts and such. I'm sure you guys know the one I am thinking of. It's and indoors industrial map. I don't see why the map has to be outside?
-

I think you mean "coi". Yea that map looks pretty good.

they used a lot of custom textures to make it look good. That map doesn't play that good, maybe for death match because when you play on ctf there is 1 fast way and the rest are slow.

It's going to be hard, but we have a lot of determined mappers. Hopefully we'll be able to work it out together.

Sounds like a cool idea, just would make it very hard to block vis.

That would be coi! (Like Spain said). Dr Rick Dagless MD, amazing mapper.
Looks amazing.
I'm currently in my exam period, but after that, I will have a month or so off. This is a great idea, we just had to push.
-
I've just finished my exams so I'll be willing to put the hours and the effort in as I have a lot of time off. I'm surprised by the amount of people wanting to participate maybe there are too many would it be better to split off into two teams and make two maps or do people prefer working in one large group?
Anyway I'm up for this.

I'd rather just have one group, as people may lose interest, more ideas etc. I'm worried if we had two maps on the go, we'd make two average maps, nothing special. I don't know :P
Cool! I hope everything went awesome for you! Thanks for the enthusiasm :)
-
Alright guys, I have a bit of time and was wondering if people were still keen on this? If not this, we could always finish the old Community map!
-
When you still search for help.. I have much time at the moment. My mapping skills are .. expandable, but I think I know the basics.
-
i will have vacances from school soon so i should have time as well.
-
Got nothing but time right now.
-
So do you guys want to start from scratch, or finish the old community map? I really don't mind.
-
What old community map? You mean the ideas in this thread?
-
What old community map? You mean the ideas in this thread?
The one that mayzing, or how ever you spell it started ;P
(Attached)
-
Are we going to do this or what? Lets stop talking and start MAPPING!!!
-
Who is going to start?
-
I'm currently in the middle of my exams, so if someone wants to start, please feel free to!
-
I can start on it this weekend.
edit- actually i can't, me n clipz are working on our map for the mapping contest.
