Hello there,
The euro match scene as we know it, is dying. There just doesn't seem to be much 'going on' anymore. Practicing can just seems like a waste of time and the funmatches sometimes don't even seem worthwhile - (No one is keeping score, right?)
Well me and my team came up with an idea to make it a little more interesting, it's not flawproof, but hey, at least it's something.
Basically, every other Saturday team sPecial hosts a 2v2 tournament. The 2v2 tournament is mixed with random and organised teams of 2, all different skill levels, to match it up in a 2v2 tournament. So far, it's been a great success and has proved to be very fun.
I host the servers on a VPS in london, and a hand-coded website for the tournament here:

(Yes, I know that is massively over-sized, but if you are still reading till now, that is the most important thing you need to notice.)
Usually, it will start at this time:
5 PM British time,
6 PM German time.
The teams are funteams, you just find a mate and create a funtag with no letters.

Okay, so, say we finish these 5 tournaments, where do we go from here? What is the point of these? Well, eventually, we have plans to livestream each tournament, with commentary Etc. As it progresses, more players may join back to the game, as there is something to practice for. Then, as more players progress, them 2v2 teams could turn into clans, once there are then a lot more clans, 3v3 tournaments can be a possibility!
The benefit of livestreaming and running the tournament by that is, everyone who enters, just watches the livestream, all announcements of servers there and, newbies from pub servers don't need ts3, they just watch the stream! This way, newbies can see it being streamed and will want them to be on it, a good way to introduce newbies to the scene.
I see this as a good way forward and I want to just thank everybody who has participated for supporting these events, you are doing your part for the community just by turning up!

There are not specific rules currently, but normally, the timelimit is 5 minutes with flagmustbeatbase.

I hope these tournaments will begin to become routine to the point where you have many members turning up every week and then you integrate some official rankings or whatnot, maybe eventually someone else (or you) can run an NA tournament in the week the EU is not running.

RULE CHANGES
- The sPecial tournament plays 1 maps per a round, 10 minutes timelimit. Each team takes in turns to eliminate 1 map each from the list. The team at the top of the round bracket eliminates a map first.
- Rounds cannot end in ties, as only 1 map is played per round. END POSITIONS are determained by MAPS WON and there will be a tiebreaker at the end of the tourney if 2 teams end with the same map wins. The tie map will then be decided by the two teams taking in turns to eliminate a map from the list, the map ended up with, is the tie.

That's how many tournaments are.... Many DP tournaments had prizes, without an entry cost. It increases the competition.
But, ego's are huge in this game, so any run tournament is good for the game. It's unfortunate that 2v2 is likely the only way to be able to do frequent tournaments, though.
I work so I can't make it (since yeah, I do still play DP), but goodluck.
PS Jitspoe hacks, he told me. He coded it around his cheat detection, so he automatically wins.

Unfortunately, the tournament could last 2 hours and people would have to go if I delayed it too much. :/ Maybe you could find a sub till you come back? There will probably be 6 rounds, so you could find a sub for the first one? :)

The most dominant team in DP2 history comes out on top. Thanks to JMR's team and Missions team for giving us actually good games. Also, NA teams are the best #MyersShkClipzjitspoes #WeDaBest
Tournament ran really smoothly, no complaining by anyone, something I've never seen from NA tournaments. My only complaint would be for the tournament to use IRC rather than Teamspeak for communication. It's just easier, plus promotes some of these people to use IRC.
Fun tournament though, goodjob on keeping these going.
PS: To everyone who didn't participate - participating and winning is worth it. The prize at the end is more enjoyable than receiving money.

I personally want to thank everyone who participated. Made the effort worth while, I also want to thank the NA players for participating and playing on EU servers. :)
Maybe next time I could livestream some of it and sit out from playing. meh, we'll see.
Oh and, if you didn't play, myers was right, you missed the best part which was the end.

Maps were pretty predictable on the outcome. Certain maps were always eliminated right away. A maplist in a tournament shouldn't have such a predictable outcome.
Maps like Skylit are never played, and are pretty much a free ban.
Me and Shockwave did not bother discussing our elims up until the final 1 or 2. We basically said: "elim the stupid maps"
We actually trolled our last game (since we already guaranteed first place) which left us playing Skylit. Safe to say, we understand why nobody played it the entire tournament. That being said - as much as I like Pforest, it's not really a great 2v2 map. It also wasn't played (as far as I saw) in the tournament.
Last criticism: already wrote before but IRC > TS3 for communication/organizing IMO

I think prolandr, pfo are bad maps for 2v2. Skylit is just horrible. No offense jmr idk why you put overhang in it either. I know you made the map but its not very popular. You should use smaller maps not maps like prolandr which some people don't know and can just get out jumped to lose. Not to sure which maps would be good to replace, ill be a little biased but rallyr_b1 is a perfect 2v2 map.
I agree with Myers, IRC has always been the way of communication for this game. Using it for this tourny could get some of the "newer" players to get on and possibly re amp the NA vs EU match scene which is gone.

Blame me for skylit. I'm pretty sure I showed it to JMR/ told him to put it in, I just wanted another option other than the standard maps. Pforest got played and I don't think is that bad though. I agree add rallyr_b1.

People have a right to complain about what happens but it was a great tournament and it all worked out in the end. Most people enjoyed it unfortunately some people with the loudest voices didnt. Good job and I hope the next series is just as special.

Tournament was going well until the semis. We were accused of "cheating" by reconing (there should never be obs blackout off... but we let people come in and listen to prove we weren't)
Then in the finals, server gets shut down mid game. Nobody gets told for 5-10mins the reason. And JMR decides to blame "PEOPLE LIKE MYERS RUIN TOURNAMENTS". I'd just like to say, WE (Trio and Me/Shk) told you to PW the server, we wanted the obs out. What happened was everyone BUT the two teams in the finals. We were just playing, and the server slots got full because YOU didn't change the password, and YOU didn't kick them. YOU made the mistake which led to you being out of the server. Don't blame me. I called you out after cause it was the biggest waste of time.
But blame me, when I was one of the only people following the rules. Ykno, "no spectators in server" - I never was in a server to spec. I only was in to play.
Why would people want to watch a stream over specing? Speccing - they choose who they watch, they hear game sounds, its better quality, and they don't have to watch you noclipping. Unless you force it (writing in rules isn't forcing) - then you can't blame them. You could have solved the problem, but killing the server DURING the finals was stupid as intercourse.
Congrats to TRio for winning, like always it's only ever you guys who actually gives us good games. If there were more teams like you guys, we'd actually play. But it got boring only playing you guys every day.
SIDE NOTE: WOOOH 2 OF THE TOP 4 TEAMS WERE NA. WHADDUP NA THE BEST.

When I was in obs, though, I wasn't talking (except to have people specinvite me)...
I like specing by myself, not watching the livestream though, because I can do what I want. I think the livestream is good though, so the people who couldn't come to this tourney could at least watch it. :D ... Oh yeah, I loved the commentary! ;D
And when I got kicked for not really doing anything, I was kinda disappointed.
You know you can just kick certain people who are idling/talking/not doing what the players want them to do, (in this case, stop talking) not kick everyone from the match and restart the server just because you couldn't get in and livestream the finals.
All in all, it was a good tournament, and good job to all the teams that participate. I hope to see more of these in the future.

Great tournament, really enjoyed it, commentary was fun to listen to ^^.
Hope you plan on keeping these tournaments up. Its probably the only thing that keeps me still in this game, because there is so many people so its fun to play against everyone again. It was nice to see that you were able to administrate the tournament pretty well even tho there was so many participants, although there were slight issues in the grand finals in the end it worked out.
What should have been done immediately was to kick everyone and password to server changed and told only to the people who were supposed to be there, basically what you did in the end. I agree that some people might prefer spectating in pb, but rules didnt allow it. Its your tournament, so if someone doesnt obey the rules, just punish them (kick).

Tips for the livestream:
Don't use phrases like "nice play" and "very interesting" as much. Every 10 seconds I hear this.
Try to give more of an insight on what is happening in the game rather than where people are.
Use first person while chasing. imo 3rd person is annoying to watch.
Noclp viewing mode was a nice touch but most of the time hindered the viewing experience so dont use it apart from somthing like wob mid when all players are there.
Apart from that it was a fun watch, almost makes dp seem like a proper esport. Hopefully you can do another tourny with a livestream, it was your first time and it went better than you think :)

Really enjoyed the tournament, even though we lost. For me personally, having these tournaments ran weekly could get me to start taking the game more seriously again and actually put some time into practising. I was also surprised by some of the new players I hadn't really heard of for example missions who was definitely a challenge, and showed he possesses a lot of skill in the game. As for tips, the stream started to lag near the end of the tournament, and for me I feel having a smooth stream is the best stream. The music and gameplay sound could be a little higher as well. JMR, I appreciate all the time and effort you put into making this all happen and i'm sure a lot of others do too. Was fun, gg all.

Well, TRION's team is the only team from that different continent, and they joined last minute, replacing another team so... I don't think he could've changed the time in that last tournament.

Okay, so, say we finish these 5 tournaments, where do we go from here? What is the point of these? Well, eventually, we have plans to livestream each tournament, with commentary Etc. As it progresses, more players may join back to the game, as there is something to practice for. Then, as more players progress, them 2v2 teams could turn into clans, once there are then a lot more clans, 3v3 tournaments can be a possibility!

My idea was a series of tournaments which would end with the grand finals, while teams could get points even from unusual modes/maps (bombsaway, soccer) so all teams had chance, for the grand fianls you would get much more points.
I think your tournaments would be great for it, I unfortunately never had a chance to get it going.

Please start the tournament this weekend. This is the last free weekend for me (cause of Christmas, my birthday, league game) and i want to take part in the tournament. Until now I had always league game when a tournament has taken place.

Mission proposed me a similar idea. It would be an individual point system from all the tournaments, ranking by individual participants, instead of teams themselves. You'd get points for participating, coming in the top 3, or a grand prize of points. After a certain number of tournaments, the top 5 players would be announced and added to a 'hall of fame' sort of speak.
The only problem is the community. Would people actually care? It's all well and good me putting tons of effort and time into it, but I have schoolwork Etc to do on top. It's very tricky. Would people even care? Would people make the effort?
I was thinking of making an account system to go with mission's idea. So users would sign in, view their profile on what tournaments they'd won Etc and would be able to view the global leaderboard. But again, would people make the effort to use their account and login? I'm not sure, again, my effort is only worth it if the community truly will use it.
Another idea I had was to create specific competitive maps for a tournament series. (Like pbcup), maybe 'spec_', 'tourn_' or something. If you have any tag suggestions for a map series like this, please let me know!

Then, the people would have at least 2 weeks to learn each map and the series would become the maplist for the tournament. The tag would be 'spec_', just like 'pbcup', but for the spec competitions.
I want to know,
(1) Would you take the time to learn the maps? (I'd provide .loc files so you could use text recon.)
(2) What do you think of the 'spec_' tag? I mean, #sPec# are here to last, so, I don't think there's much issue there. Plus these maps will be 'special' anyway, we will put a lot of time and detail in them, so they will be different from the rest in a good way. I will really think about competitive gameplay for these maps too.
(3) Would you support the idea in general? Y/N?

I wouldn't trust ourselves as a clan, as talented as you, stomper and omni are, to make a full set of maps with exceptional gameplay in a reasonably finite amount of time (because thats what it really takes to make a map for a tourny). It would take too long, atleast 2 weeks to put each map into beta, then if you want them to be good, countless hours of enhancing and bug fixes. DP has already got a fine set of maps... unless you are thinking or re skinning the maps? Well then some pople may feel the gameplay has changed too much... idk is it worth the effort?

I could make 3 maps in 2 months, this would be like over the course of like 3 months. The maps would be brand new, like the current one I am working on for example :)

Unfortunately, this is DP2. If these maps weren't instantly seen as Pbcup level quality, I highly doubt you will increase participation. So at best, all your work will give you the same outcome - and possibly less if people don't like the map. So, the question to you becomes: Is that effort worth the same participation - and potentially less?
NA's are stubborn, they wont join if they don't like the maps. So, you certainly wont increase through NA participation, other than the ones who have previously participated, that is.
And as far as I know, most of the EU teams already participate. So, as long as they like the maps participation wont be changed there.
I don't think it's worth the effort when the max you can get is 2v2. In reality, most 2v2 games don't really require much communication between teams, you rarely set up grabs etc... If it gets to the point where you're able to constantly run 3v3 tournaments then I would say it'd be worth giving it a shot with this idea.
So, IMO, you should work on maps that can be viable in 3v3 play, but don't release them yet. Try to get 3-5 maps done, then if your tournaments pick up and expand, release them and try the idea. If they don't, then just release them as maps, and try to incorporate them into tournaments.
As for the name - I wouldn't do a team name. spec_whatevermap isn't good. eR33t didn't do eR33t_map - they did Pbcup. Try to find some alternative. Eventually, if the game is still "active" after you quit, having your tag in the name will seem weird.

No, I'm sorry there is not. It takes at least a week to prepare for a tournament like this. The 2v2 tournament series is for every OTHER Saturday, but the series has been halted until I get another solid date plan and processs feedback. :)
Who would play 3v3? I'm guessing there'd only be like 4 teams.

I think that every team which played 2v2 could get another mate to play 3v3 or at least most of them. The question is, if they would want to play/ had time to play.
Also commentating 3v3 would be easier than 2v2, because in 3v3 there is some strategy, while 2v2 can be won by single person.
We would participate in 3v3 or 2v2.

I would 100% participate in a 3 versus 3, assuming I do not work during it - and it doesn't conflict with a final exam for this semester.

I think the best thing to do for now would probably be to try another tournament similar to the 2v2 but with 3v3. You've established a process that works pretty well, so I'd build on it slowly.
As for map prefixes, I don't like the idea. I don't like the pbcup_ prefixes, personally. It just seems weird to me, as the maps will likely be played outside of the tournaments if they are good, and it's just unnecessary characters to type when loading the maps.

Prefixes keep the maps together in a database and promote other maps in the series, for example, "pbcup_pforest is a good map, i think i will look at the other pbcup maps". However I would still rather do a 3s tourny will normal maps.

Planning on holding a 3v3 tournament in about 2 weeks. Been spending time organizing this and seeing what I can improve on from last time. :)
It was good that we had a 2 week break as it lets me up the standard. I might hold it on the 21st.
I will be creating a new 3v3 thread once I finalize things. Will be interesting on how many teams will turn up.
