You shouldn't release the same map under different names.  Instead, release betas, fix the issues, and release the final version.  Also, keep your map name all lowercase, as Linux has issues with case sensitivity.  Follow this guide here:

looks like you used back2back for the map design and look... personally i hate that map, so i will actually download this to take a look at it

*yikes, that map is so unorganized, and that high tunnel needs some sort of lighting

Post by: Spook on March 16, 2007, 05:42:58 PM
well it should be there as a completely new file in the same folder.

one other thing about your map, if you didnt catch my edit, the high tunnel needs lighting, and your ladders are ungodly huge, i think they would be over 8 feet wide according to jitspoes conversions
Title: Re: New map - Boxed2 (well 2 standing for fixed)
Post by: Silly on March 16, 2007, 05:48:10 PM
Hehe ya the ladders are giant :P:P

but the high tunnel is sapose to be dark. Too make people turn back and be like

oh nothing here :P:P

**EDIT

spook i meant that when i right clicked on it that the

"compress" icon did not appear

*edit

so other than the ladders....

do you think it is good?
Title: Re: New map - Boxed2 (well 2 standing for fixed)
Post by: jitspoe on March 16, 2007, 05:56:43 PM
It should be there if you're using XP.  If not, you need to grab something like winzip.

Anyway, some general feedback on the map:
- It needs more than one path.  The high path isn't really that accessible, and is very limited and needs lighting.
- There's a lot of really unrealistic stuff that kills the atmosphere, like massive ladders.  One is even made of sand.
- Textures need to be rotated in many different locations.  Some things could stand to have a texture other than the wood planks, too.
- Red flag stand uses tiles, blue uses wood (minor detail).

I can run through it with a demo and be more specific later, if you want.  This should really be boxed_b2.bsp or boxed_beta2.bsp.  If you want to follow the guide and work on turning this into a good map, I'll upload it to the beta server for play testing.

Edit: My net connection died and there were like 10 replies since I tried to post this.

I renamed the map to boxed_b2.bsp and uploaded it to the beta server.  I'm sending you a PM with the details.  Note that you need to put the map in your pball/maps/beta directory:

Is it just me, or did you mess up your spawn points? I spawned, it seemed, randomly no matter what team I was on.
Title: Re: New map - Boxed2 (well 2 standing for fixed)
Post by: jitspoe on March 16, 2007, 08:08:03 PM
I think the spawn angles also need to be fixed.  I'm pretty sure I spawned facing the wall.

ugh, not another one of these maps in these wood places, you should make more paths rather than one straight forward one, too easy to camp
Title: Re: New map - Boxed2 (well 2 standing for fixed)
Post by: Silly on March 17, 2007, 02:43:20 PM
Yeah, im gonna make 3 paths. 1 up top, one middle and one under ground. I think that would spice things up a little bit, lol.

Im thinking that the underground path may have a medium sized open space in the middle with barrels and such.

How do you de-compile?

Keep in mind that it can really screw up.

I don't feel like explaining it, so decompile antiochseige. The re-compile (qbsp.bat) and play it.

That is the worst one that I have seen.

Now you see the importance of beta testing.  I've added your new betas to the beta server.  There are still some critical things that need fixing -- primarily with the spawn points and ladders that can't be climbed.  I've attached a demo.  It got cut off abruptly, but instead of using water in that secret area, use the "mist" flag along with "translucent".

Oh, and you need to make the filenames all lowercase.

Title: Re: New map - Boxed2 (well 2 standing for fixed)
Post by: jitspoe on March 20, 2007, 08:33:22 PM
I put your latest beta up on the server for testing.  I still think the ladders need some more work visually.  They're still way too big and the wood textures need rotating in some places.  I put together a tutorial to help you out here: http://dplogin.com/forums/index.php?topic=5439.0

Also, some of the lights are still made out of wood, which just looks weird.  A metal texture would look better, and maybe make them less thick as well.
Title: Re: New map - Boxed2 (well 2 standing for fixed)
Post by: Silly on March 20, 2007, 08:35:46 PM
really the ladders are still tooo big?
ok.

I will make the lights to a metal texture too.

After that do you think it will be good?
Title: Re: New map - Boxed2 (well 2 standing for fixed)
Post by: jitspoe on March 20, 2007, 08:55:39 PM
It could still use some play testing to make sure everything works right.  Also, that barrel by the entrance to the high path kind of bugs me.  The texture alignment is all wonky.
Title: Re: New map - Boxed2 (well 2 standing for fixed)
Post by: Silly on March 21, 2007, 12:31:35 PM
i actually like how the lights are still wood, cause i tried to do some metal  textures and it looked awful. So all ima do is just turn the texture horizontally so that it looks better

Edit:

Finshed it

You put boxed_b6.prt in the zip file instead of boxed_b6.bsp.  Also, there's no sense in including all the previous betas in the zip file as well.  I doubt anybody is going to want anything but the latest.

The ladder to the tower looks better, but the underground ladder still needs work.  Also, you might want to change the map message back to "Boxed" instead of "Boxed2", since this is just a fix for your boxed map.

I still think the wood light sides look weird, but whatever.  Your choice.

I've put it up on the beta server for play testing.  I'd suggest getting a few people on to try it out before finalizing it.

Post by: jitspoe on March 23, 2007, 06:57:36 PM
Ladders look better.  Still a bit thick, but at least they're within reason now.  The stairs in the middle don't line up with the angled sides, and they're too big to walk up.  Also, I don't think there's any CO2 in the map.  I kind of like the idea of having to be conservative, but it probably won't go over well with a lot of players, plus without even the little canisters, it's possible to completely run out and not be able to shoot at all.

I made another demo.  I forgot to point this out in the demo, but I think you should align the textures on the barrels to the high path.
Title: Re: New map - Boxed2 (well 2 standing for fixed)
Post by: Silly on March 23, 2007, 07:00:45 PM
well, as you know this would be a very good map to line/spray/spawncamp. Sooo i thought it would be better to take away c02, and, therefore creating no lineing. And yes there is c02 in this map. Secret area.

If you fix the barrel alignment, I think it's probably about done, then.

What barrel alignment?

Title: Re: New map - Boxed2 (well 2 standing for fixed)
Post by: jitspoe on March 23, 2007, 09:14:31 PM
You need to either stretch or shrink the texture so the top/bottom of the barrel texture lines up with the top and bottom of your barrel brushes.  Texture and brush edges have been highlighted.
Title: Re: New map - Boxed2 (well 2 standing for fixed)
Post by: Silly on March 23, 2007, 09:16:37 PM
Well there is a reason for that... cause of teh double jump to get up to the high path?

or is there a way of doing it so like you said
Title: Re: New map - Boxed2 (well 2 standing for fixed)
Post by: jitspoe on March 23, 2007, 09:18:33 PM
Right, but you need to adjust the textures to match up with the brushes.  In the surface properties, you can set the scale and offset of textures.  It will probably take some work to get them aligned right in that case, but it can be done.

Looks like the barrel texture alignment still hasn't been fixed.  Also, when I loaded the map, I got a bunch of errors:

Quote
Bad field -> GiveC02 == 20oz
Bad field -> GiveC02 == 20oz
Bad field -> GiveC02 == 20oz
Bad field -> GiveC02 == 20oz
Bad field -> GiveC02 == 20oz
Bad field -> GiveC02 == 20oz
Bad field -> GiveC02 == 20oz
Bad field -> GiveC02 == 20oz
Bad field -> GiveC02 == 20oz
Bad field -> GiveC02 == 20oz

It's GiveCO2, not GiveC02 (oh, not zero).  I thought you weren't going to give people CO2 to prevent spray?

And from the BSP shot you provided, I noticed some brush overlaps, which is really bad mapping practice.

The maps nice for a first.. i don't like how quick you can run from flag to flag you should make a jump to prevent some time or make it more difficult.
Title: Re: Final copy of Boxed

Wtf, i never even added co2. thats weird.

It musta been from my previous verisons... Though im sure that i took it out.

Alright.. you got some more work to do. Sorry to inform you. Here are some SS's

(http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k238/Mike_Gallo/sshot019.jpg)

Ok first rotate the wood make sure its all going the same way.

(http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k238/Mike_Gallo/sshot020.jpg)

Second your missing the other ramp...

(http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k238/Mike_Gallo/sshot021.jpg)

Third well this is more of a suggestion. Move your ramp back drop the wall down so you have to get up to the tunnel. It will still be quicker then the other paths but it might take some jumping skills to make it.

Just make sure to rotate all the wood.. besides that nice job.
Title: Re: Final copy of Boxed
Post by: Silly on March 26, 2007, 08:28:44 AM
i meant to put the ramp there, cause the big tower is closer to the other side.

But on the other side its hard to get up, cause its easier to get on the path

but the third suggestion i like alot

Thanks!

There are some serious lighting issues now (see screenshot).  Looks like you went back to the older bsp package with phong shading on the sand.

Doesn't look like you've touched the barrel texture alignment, either. :P

That's a bug in the newest BSP. You can still make barrels easily, but you have to go through another menu.
You can stick with that version of BSP and still use the old pack. Just download the newest pack, and move the BSP files of the version you want into it.

Title: Re: Final copy of Boxed
Post by: jitspoe on April 02, 2007, 03:11:36 PM
The ground looks a lot better.  The only problem with shadows now is on the barrels.  To fix that, you probably need to use a different phong value on each barrel.  In the value box for the surface properties, just enter some different number for each barrel.  You don't want the top of the barrels to be phong shaded though, so leave the value at 0 there.  Any barrels touching each other should have a different phong value, otherwise they'll try to blend together.

Edit: Beta 10 has been put up on the beta server for testing.
Title: Re: Final copy of Boxed
Post by: Silly on April 02, 2007, 05:08:45 PM
what kind of surface property... like

try to move the

"S" "T" "R"

Around until it looks good.
That would take a long time to for the final comple and see if the lighting is right, and if it's not... Well then it would be a waste of time.

Title: Re: Final copy of Boxed
Post by: jitspoe on April 02, 2007, 05:28:35 PM
The edit box on the upper left that says "value".  The value needs to be different for each barrel that's touching so they don't try to blend together.  The compiler will try to phong shade everything with the same value together.

Barrel lighting looks a lot better now.  Good work.  I've put it up on the beta server.  Two minor things left to fix:  You've still got a "GiveC02" field somewhere, and there are a couple item_pballammos that start inside of a wall or floor.  Look at the console when you load the map and it will tell you where they are.  Other than that, I think it's probably done unless anybody else has some suggestions.  I guess the only thing you might consider changing is adding a ladder for the high path out of the base so the newer players / unskilled jumpers could use that path, but make it slower than using the ramp, so it balances out.

Nah. see, the high path was meant to be, more of a treat.

the experienced players could have an easy way to get to the other base, granted they had the proper skills.
Lol, an award for good skill :P

To me this seems somewhat unfair to make it easier for players with higher skill. Why make it easier for them to get to the other base when they could probably go the main way and still get to the other base just as easily?

Do bots automatically spawn with the 20 oz CO2?
In the area you find the autococker, a bot spawned (though it looked like he walked through the wall) and he had a 20oz co2.

Do bots normally spawn with better stuff?

edit:
lmao, i walked 2 feet away then it hit me, so i fired it up and sure enough I know exactly where the automag and 2 Co2s are now =P
if ya want me to delete this to keep the secret, let me know, but it's a nice touch =P

No. It all depends on the spawn points themselves.

Thanks zorch, I didn't think so, I figured out why he had it in that case, but I still just wondered.. sometimes those bots are pretty good...

All in all I really like this map.  It's big and really spread out but it has a lot of cool parts about it.  Nice work Silly! and Clipz, Jitspoe, and anyone else who provided feedback

Once i get all those c02 and hopper stuff and the map is done... what do i do with it?
and what is the process of "releasing" the map so other people can play it in other peoples servers?

Jitspoe:

I went through the .map in BSP and didnt see any texture misalignments, or any problems. I personally think that it is complete.

Zorchenhimer:

It is already attached on the first post of this topic

School. I hate the filter with a passion.

Edit:
I went through the map real quick and found something you might want to fix. This is in both of the back doors.

Release it. :P
Just name it "boxed.bsp", post it, and tell the people that have the latest beta to rename it. But I wouldn't till Jits Ok's it, just to be safe.

You need to rename the bsp file, too, not just the zip.  But that's ok, I renamed it and uploaded it here: http://dplogin.com/files/maps/boxed.bsp
