Title: IRC Server Discussion
Post by: lekky on May 15, 2007, 04:42:27 PM
Ok so, im starting this thread as a discussion in which I feel we can increase the size of this community.

I really feel we should move to Quakenet, rather than stay at GGC as we are now. I think joining a large network would go massive lengths to getting more people to play this game.

At the moment we are stuck in a tiny server all to ourselves, just do a /list and you'll see exactly what i mean. Sometimes it feels like some members of this community want to keep it for themselves, there own little secret game where they can be king. The game has a lot more potential than we are allowing it to have. New clans that might play this game, wont because they will not come to our server, and cannot be involved in our community. Im absolutely certain this wouldn't be the case on a server like Quakenet.

I've been idling in Quakenet for a fair while now, and I honestly see no problem with aving our community on there. This game cannot bring in new gamers on its own, we need to actively help it do this if we really want to increase the popularity of the game.

On a side note I have been told that we were once on the Quakenet server, and left for some reason?

Lets discuss this without bias, and for the good of this game and our community.

Well, the good outcome for this could be: That we get more players to the community, and that DPball becomes more known.

I think it's a good idea, and worth trying.. not like it's very hard to switch servers..

I was never keen on the move to gg-center to begin with.  I haven't scoped out QuakeNet, but between ETG and GlobalGamers, I still think ETG is the better of the two.  Even with half the people #paintball still has more activity on ETG.

ETG did shoot themselves in the foot, though when they started banning people for "advertising" the other network.

+1 for QuakeNet for the reasons Lekky mentioned.  Although I won't be able to be there very often, as people behind my proxy seem to get banned from there fairly often :D

Hey what IRC channel is Dp on?

I believe you mean server.

And it is on irc.gg-center.net

ETG was fine but they were too much of a hassle. GGc is a very friendly community and easy to use server, although its small and has frequent netsplits. I think it's fine for now. If we move anywhere it should be Gamesurge
Title: Re: IRC Server Discussion

Not gamesurge because of the terribleness, and NOT quakenet

Joe I have nothing against GGC, I think the admins are a great bunch tbh. But its not helping this game being stuck on there one little bit. Like I said we need to put the community first if we want to help the game reach its potential audience.
Title: Re: IRC Server Discussion
Post by: JOE on May 16, 2007, 01:20:12 PM
the game is growing...its bigger than its ever been, it has more clans that it ever has..i dont know what more you want? Its a game based on the Quake2 engine and to be honest so many gamers are going to pass DP up because of that
Title: Re: IRC Server Discussion
Post by: lekky on May 16, 2007, 01:47:53 PM
Don't you see, thats exactly my point.

Its hard enough getting new players as it is, new players will not go out of their way to start playing this game. Being on, what is like our own hideaway server, is out of their way. We need to make it easier for people to come in and integrate themselves with us as a community, not add extra ways to block them from doing so.

and in quakenet the ppl aren't really interested in "old" games like pb2... they play battlefield2 counterstrike and other games like that

I have to disagree with that. I've spent the last couple of days going around clan sites that play games like BF2 and CS:S, and alot of them have shown interest in this game with one having a clan match on the same day i let them know about it. Like i've been saying, there is alot of potential for the game even if its just down to the quality gameplay.

ETG was fine, we didn't own the top 20 channels there. But lets make a move really worthwhile, Quakenet will add new players, of that I have no doubt.
Title: Re: IRC Server Discussion
Post by: AsThor on May 17, 2007, 12:43:53 PM
Why should we go to quakenet?
I like it as well as it is here on GGC.
Quakenet is excrement, we may have only 5 operators per channel with this L bot.
Then are already awarded channel names like #paintball or #darkness
I don't like this idea.
Title: Re: IRC Server Discussion
Post by: lekky on May 17, 2007, 12:49:40 PM
Asthor no, you may only have 5 operators maximum to originally register a channel. Once registered you can have as many as you like. I actually like the process of registering channels. Together with the global login it should help make the clanning scene more structured. No more clans being made on the spot then dying 5 minutes later, only to reform again under a different name.
Title: Re: IRC Server Discussion
Post by: Major on May 17, 2007, 07:16:00 PM
is what your saying that you need 5 people to register a channel? bad idea say people new to the game want to start channel and not all of them have irc yet.. than they cant start channel or if there is 5 people there is obviously going to be fights over the channel plus community channels dont need 5 people pretty sure shud only be jitspoe n 1 or 2 more or pbcup also pretty sure bain doesnt want to share his channel
Title: Re: IRC Server Discussion
Post by: lekky on May 17, 2007, 07:30:22 PM
Thats not it either. To register a channel, you must have at least 1, and at most 5 moderators.Once the channel is registered you can have as many as you like.

Let me remind you about how many netsplits quakenet has, the lack of good services,  and overall terribleness.
Stick with GGC.
Title: Re: IRC Server Discussion
Post by: lekky on May 17, 2007, 08:49:51 PM
We are GGC. We need to move to a larger server to open up the community. True there are more netsplits than GGC, but to be honest its hard to notice as you're back on straight away.
Title: Re: IRC Server Discussion
Post by: SkateR on May 17, 2007, 09:24:29 PM
Being on a different network is not going to help the game.

It seems GGC has more netsplits than ETG, not that it's really much of an issue on either network.

1.do u really think ppl who play quake 4, counterstrike, aa would play a quake 2 mod? lmao
2. Quakenet is horrible to use. (amo - am what ever i hate the levels for OPs in quakenet.
3. No scrim Reguests, No Member-script, No lastmatch-script. Its not for dp made.

It isnt made 4 clans...
Sure u can go to 20n2 and find a cs match but QN isnt supporting gamers like gamesurge or ggc.

And mZ is right...who the intercourse cares about a quake2 mod..if he plays cs:source...dod:source or Quake 4 or Americas Army ?!
Title: Re: IRC Server Discussion
Post by: frozi on May 18, 2007, 05:16:34 AM
i like ggc its very friendly there and all but i understand that you want to move to a bigger network because dpball could be more popular.

BUT quakenet is the wrong choice in my opinion.
-the network is not really made for clans
-noone will care about dp
-commands are terrible
-ggc is better but smaller

the only point for Qnet is they have more then 1000 people idling there.

so why should we move there :(
Title: Re: IRC Server Discussion
Post by: b00nlander on May 18, 2007, 05:34:05 AM
- actually there are a bunch of q2 and q2-mod communities on Quakenet.  And probably nowhere else.
- I agree on the !scrim command, all others are quite useless and could be coded for your own channel without much effort
- GGC-admins grant paintball-users a lot of attention, but that is simply because they'd have nobody to pay attention to when paintball is gone, as we probably make up 1/2 of their users
Title: Re: IRC Server Discussion

For your interest, UT makes up a big part of GGC's network... irc.UTchat.com is even forwarding to GGC. ;)

- GGC-admins grant paintball-users a lot of attention, but that is simply because they'd have nobody to pay attention to when paintball is gone, as we probably make up 1/2 of their users
Right on that point, though :)
1/2 dp, 1/2 UT and a few who are related to some of the admins.

i mean guys its not important if someone is right or wrong in some points.
you see in this threat that like the half of the community dont want to move away or dont want to move to QNet.
so if we move now we will move again and again.
paintball is not that small because we are on ggc you also could advertise the game in messengers or on homepages.
Title: Re: IRC Server Discussion
Post by: lekky on May 18, 2007, 09:29:20 AM
My basic argument in this thread is that we should move to a larger server in order to help the game grow. I've been idling on Quakenet for quite a while and so i put that forward as a viable option. I think most of the people in this community who want the game to grow, rather than keep it for themselves, are in agreement that a larger server would be best for us.

Growing ftw.
Title: Re: IRC Server Discussion
Post by: frozi on May 18, 2007, 10:43:35 AM
there are some problems in finding a large network + the great support we know from ggc.
i checked gamesurge for this and there are also no clan commands and nothing but gamesurge is using
mostly the same commands as ggc uses. and there is a userbase with 25000 registerd users an admin told me.
its better then quakenet but isnt supporting as good as ggc !

quakenet is the place to be :) - Another reason for quakenet is a lot of people now-a-days use IRC Bouncers, and most companies that provide them only allow people to use Quakenet (All my Clan for example)

I absolutly agree with lekky. On GlobalGamers there aren't much players, if you look "/list" there are just Dp Clans. We should move to QuakeNet so other players can see this game.

PS: Sorry for my bad english, #F4E at QuakeNet.

There are also many places to get 24/7 bots that either have clan specific commands, or allow you to define your own commands. Check out #qehs on quakenet for example. Just type the following:

/server -m quakenet -j #qehs

By the way, being scared of change is not a valid argument so don't use it. Remember the whole aim of this is to bring more players to the game, and the number of clans who have moved there now have already done that.

this was discussed when we moved from ETG to GGC. other servers were mentioned and we all moved to GGC. i dont think people want to move again. IMO i am very comfortable where we are and i am sure alot of people feel the same. if you want to bring more people to the game it would probably be easier to advertise the game elsewhere than to actually keep switching servers. it is a good idea but it just seems like it would be alot of hassle like it was when everyone moved from ETG.
Title: Re: IRC Server Discussion
Post by: lekky on May 20, 2007, 04:13:19 PM
Cola, i too am comfortable at GGC. I have no problems with it and i think the admins have treated us well. But then again this move is not about that, nor is it like the last move where to be honest most people wanted to stay at GGC.

I have been trying to advertise this game alot lately, and the one recurring theme from other people and clans is why are we on "our own irc server". We cant bring new players to this game purely on reputation, if we could I would not even be creating such a thread. Having the community on a big server such as Quakenet will allow other clans and players to instantly interact with us. At the moment they see no reason to come to "our server" for a game they have not heard about, however, joining a new channel on a server they currently use would not be a big stumbling block.

As for the hassle, we and a few other clans have managed to set ourselves up there without any problems. Moving the whole community will not be so easy, but I think the potential benefits are too great to dismiss.

Being on the small server we are now helps "more clueless people running around pubs". Being on a larger server will a) make us more accessable to people so we can help them and b) give current clans that play other games a chance to join our community (eg tezc).

We should join the 5 biggest networks then, to access even more people, and thus helping dp to get more players than CS has.

I agree with lekky as well...

Making the DP presence known on Qnet sure can't hurt.  What I see as being retarded is the fact there is so much negativity coming from a few indiviuals in this thread.

NOONE has to leave ETG, GGC or Qnet.  You can idle in 1, 2, or ALL 3 if you like.  It's not difficult to figure out.

To those of you who keep knocking this game, if you have nothing nice to say and don't wish to see it progress or help build the community, maybe you need to keep your mouths shut and move on to a newer game which of course you have to pay for.

Stop bringing the community and the game down for those of us who happen to like it.

Picasso has a great point, about idling in more than one network, which quite a few of us do anyway. But it cant be a few, or one section of the community, that defeats the purpose and makes me think some people haven't read or understood my argument for moving.

I do not have any bad feeling towards GGC, in fact I think they have done a great job with us, always there to help us and do provide some good services (I also think that ETG did just as good a job as GGc are doing).

But that is not my point, I do not want a hostile move, I want a move for the greater good of this community, and I think a move to a larger network would be of great benefit to the community.

lol frozi. if we move to qnet we need to move ALL...the comunity. There are already alot of dp players idling in qnet but we are still officialy on ggc so we cant just say:"intercourse ggc im just gonna idle in qnet"-->no we cant do that. we are still in ggc for now.

Why is it a retarded idea? I made this thread to stimulate some discussion so that if people had some valid arguments against my proposal they could put them forward, but so far there have been few valid arguments made.

Soo spent the morning going around quakenet informing clans of this game, then showing them around pub servers once they installed the game, seems being 1 clan channel on a larger server does wonders for helping new people start playing this game, wonder what could happen with a whole community over there...
