Feature: COD4-style playbacks after death
« on: January 05, 2008, 06:45:37 PM »
For those of you who don't know how COD4 handles this, what happens is that after you die you get a short view of what your opponent was seeing/doing from three or four seconds before your death to about a second after. This'd allow newer players to be able to see where exactly they were getting killed from, or what basic tactics more experienced players used. On the downside, I think it'll increase server CPU and memory usage a noticeable amount.

Hm, I think it should just be a client side option.

It should be a server-side option for admins that don't want to/can't spare the extra memory or CPU (like those running on home computers). Plus, if there were some huge game-destroying bug found in it, there'd be no way to turn it off.

I've always thought this would be a nice way to dampen the effectiveness of voice recon by delaying it.  I know some will disagree, but I think being able to relay the enemies exact position without a live player's line of sight is akin to wallhacking and greatly reduces strategic positioning.  At least with a delay, you wouldn't be able to say, "He's rounding the corner right... NOW!"

That said, this is a pretty low-priority feature in my opinion, and implementing it the way I suggested would probably annoy a lot of people.

I agree, but the clan scene'd kill you. How would they play if they didn't know exactly where there was opponent was at all times?

I'm pretty sure that a delay of 3-5 seconds is being talked about, not 100ms. ;)

No thanks.  Make it client side, but don't let servers enforce it.

...what? The server would have to participate in this to some degree. The delay being talked about above has nothing to do with this feature.

how does it involve the server at all? i was thinking that since the client was already sent packets about the killer's position and the travel of his paintball, why couldn't the client just rewind a few seconds' worth of packets, and replay them with a chasecam behind the killer, and then when it's done, resume listening to packets currently being sent from the server?

edit: nvm, the "server-side demo playback" thread just answered why not for me.

The client would have to be storing that information constantly.

yah, i thought it did, but apparently not. i wonder what kind of bandwidth the game [client] would require if it did. (not to mention what kind of bandwidth the server would need to do that.)

Can someone post a YouTube video so everyone knows what we're talking about here?

Basically it is a "killcam" that shows your death from the point of view that the person killed you from.

Around 45 seconds... 1:10, and 1:45

I noticed it also gives you an option to skip the killcam, like he does near 2 minutes. Is there any way that this can be done?

If added, should be implemented as a server-side variable, just like COD4. Also, with a skip option too. In the case of a speed pub, go straight to spawning or wait and watch the killcam.

Should be a server side option. Have "killcam" enabled on pubs but not on match servers. And basically then what ch40s said.
